‘Spikey’ by Tereza Anteneová, supported by Hedgehog preservation campaign Hedgehog Street, tells the story of Spikey, a young hedgehog that must learn what he needs in order to survive as winter fast approaches.
There’s two sets of quiz questions throughout the book, catering to younger and older readers, meaning this book could be read and enjoyed by the entire family. Spikey is a little bit different from normal hedgehogs, sleeping at night and making friends with Ladybirds and foxes, but this is a charming tale of friendship and teamwork. Through the quiz questions, readers are encouraged to think about how the different characters may be feeling, what they’re learning and what could happen next to maintain engagement with the story. The illustrations are in a watercolour style, light coloured and sweet, a great addition to the story and another aspect for younger readers to delight in.
A story of three unlikely friends that’s clearly written. I would have liked Spikey to have gradually learned to live in the dark in order to help to educate younger readers that seeing a hedgehog during the day isn’t a good thing. However, focusing on the friendship, kindness and teamwork themes throughout this story, it is a lovely read I’m sure young readers will enjoy.

About Tereza Hepburn
Tereza Hepburn (nee Anteneová) is orginally from Prague. Tereza was inspired by the long summer days that she spent with her father at their cottage in the countryside, lying in the grass and watching the wildlife; telling each other stories about the lives, hopes and dreams of all the animals they saw. Now she is a TV news reporter, TV presenter, radio broadcaster and a PR professional with over 20 years of experience as a media expert. Tereza has written many political and women’s columns for magazines, newspapers and websites and she provides presentation skills training for the Government Legal Department in London and around the UK.
She is also part of the team at The Centre for Political & Diplomatic Studies in London which helps countries to prepare for the EU presidency. She accompanied the Czech Prime Minister to the White House to cover his Presidential meetings, and asked President Barack Obama questions for her news channel both in the Oval Office and during his state visits to the Czech Republic. And she is currently an official British contributor to the Czech Radio and CNN/Prima News and Czech TV, where she comments on British politics.
Tereza lives in London, with her husband John and their two cats, Meowglish and Johnson.

In response to the worrying decline of hedgehogs across the UK, the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) launched the Hedgehog Street campaign, which seeks to conserve this iconic species and empower the British public to help hedgehogs in people’s own back gardens. By putting out some food or linking up your gardens with ‘hedgehog highways’, you can help hedgehogs.
The PTES and BHPS are also currently commissioning various research projects into the reasons for the decline of hedgehogs and measures that could be taken to reverse the effects. It’s all about giving people an understanding of hedgehogs, why they are declining and how easy it is to help them.
