But at eleven I also came across this book of his about the orphan heiress Maria who finds, hidden on a tiny island in the lake on the great overgrown estate of Malplaquet, a little world of leftover Lilliputians, still only two inches high, who have been living there in secret for over 200 years. The story has everything readers this age love: a hidden will, a sneaky and grasping vicar, a spiteful, kitten-drowning governess, dangers and chases, imprisonments and revelations. I only wish I’d written it myself."
The Lovereading Comment:
Maria is a ten-year-old orphan girl, growing up in her crumbling ancestral home, under the authority of a cold guardian and a tyrannical governess. But when Maria paddles over to a small island in the center of a lake on the grounds, she makes a marvelous discovery: the island is peopled by Lilliputians. Yes, the sea captain who rescued Gulliver so long ago, returned, and trapped a group of the unfortunate Lilliputians for a sideshow act. But, they had escaped, and built themselves a new home on the island called Mistress Masham's Repose. Unfortunately, human nature has changed very little over the last three hundred years, and the Lilliputian's safety exists only in their being unknown to the humans living around them. Can Maria safeguard the little people from her greedy guardian and governess?

Terence Hanbury White (May 29, 1906 – January 17, 1964) was an English writer, born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. After graduating from Queens' College, Cambridge with a first-class degree in English, he spent some time teaching at Stowe, before becoming a full-time writer. He was an intensely-involved naturalist. White is most famous for writing The Once and Future King, a sequence of novels that retell Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, reinterpreting the legend of King Arthur. The sequence includes: The Sword in the Stone (1938), The Queen of Air and Darkness, originally titled The Witch in the Wood (1939), The Ill-Made Knight (1940), The Candle in the Wind (1958), The Book of Merlyn (published separately and posthumously, 1977) White wrote many other books, some under a pseudonym. They include a children's book, Mistress Masham's Repose, and The Master. Other works include The Goshawk, an account of White's ill-fated attempt to train a hawk in the traditional art of falconry; The Godstone and the Blackymor, a travel book set in Ireland; England Have My Bones, an account of a year spent in England; and The Age of Scandal and The Scandalmonger, collections of essays on 18th-century England.He died aboard ship in Piraeus (Athens, Greece) while returning home to Alderney from his American lecture tour.
