A novelty book unlike any other Illuminature provides extraordinary views of the natural world via coloured filters. Look at a page of tangled, coloured lines through the red lens and a host of animals suddenly spring into view; move the green lens over the picture and their natural habitat appears, vivid, detailed and beautiful; finally, look through the blue lens and find the nocturnal animals that share the area but remain hidden in daylight. It gives readers an extraordinary sensation of being in the featured habitat alongside the animals. Each Observation Deck, as the 3D spreads are called, is followed by pages of information on the area you’ve just explored and on the animals encountered, short pieces of text accompanying fine black and white illustrations. A book that conveys a great deal of information and a sense of wonder at the majesty of the natural world. ~ Andrea Reece
The eagerly anticipated follow-up to Draw it! Colour it! Creatures, this second, stunning Macmillan activity book for all ages is your chance to join in and complete a drawing with a bestselling artist. Not only is this a book for children who love to draw but it encourages the most unconfident of scribblers to pick up a pencil and have a go. Filled with pages and pages of inspiration from favourite illustrators such as Yasmeen Ismail, Emily Gravett and of course the Children's Laureate himself, Chris Riddell, this provides the perfect opportunity to draw alongside some of the most amazing artists from around the world. A wonderful book for rainy day creativity and fun.
This animal guide book takes an unusual approach: it is presented in the form of a scrapbook completed by the author Louis Thomas as he travelled the world studying wildlife, and he and his friend Joe appear on lots of the pages interacting with animals (a note warns children not to try this at home!). Their enthusiasm for the various creatures shines through, and the book has a very warm and engaging tone. The watercolour and ink illustrations are very appealing too and often show Louis and Joe in some unusual situations! A quirky information book that is lots of fun to read, as well as being full of interesting facts. ~ Andrea Reece
Longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2014 Could it be that this little crocodile isn't a crocodile at all? He might just be a DRAGON! A funny, unique and uplifting story from a debut author-illustrator and perfect for giving a toddler confidence to get in the water.
The wonderful world of animals is explored across seven different habitats in this eye-catching book. Each page is beautifully illustrated in full colour and features a range of animals, birds, plants and insects, familiar ones and the less well known, alongside panels of short but informative text. Readers are often challenged directly, ‘Did you know …’ and with flaps to lift, wheels to turn – one cleverly demonstrates the lifecycle of a butterfly, another that of the frog – and even a pop up mountain, this will hold and keep young readers’ attention. ~ Andrea Reece
Children are invited to explore eight different habitats in this appealing and very attractive information book, clever split page design allows them to examine the creatures that live there both above and below ground or sea and it also deftly illustrates the way animals share their habitats with each other. There are spreads on the ocean, rainforest, savannah and river amongst others, one colourful page depicting a lively scene packed with fauna and flora while on the opposite page short paragraphs of text accompany details from the scenes giving readers with useful and sometimes quirky information. This look-and-find format is also very effective and Hanako Clulow’s illustrations are full of child appeal. ~ Andrea Reece

Shortlisted for the inaugural Klaus Flugge Prize, an important new illustration prize for children's books. From one regal lion to ten zebras, these superb full-page black and white drawings give readers the chance to get close to nature’s wildest creatures. A self-taught artist, Stephen Walton commands attention with arresting charcoal portraits of wild animals and this book stands out as different. Tony Ross expressed real admiration, remarking that: ‘I couldn’t draw like that, and I’d really like to.’ Lovereading4kids's expert reviewer, Julia Eccleshare is the Chair of the Judges of the Klaus Flugge Prize, she said: “We asked the judges to consider technique and artistic ability, and they chose also to take into account the illustrators’ skill at characterisation. The discussion was lively and wide ranging and the final shortlist features exciting and extremely talented illustrators. The Klaus Flugge Prize is very important, the only one to recognise new illustrator talent at this crucial early stage in a career and we look forward to watching all six of the shortlisted illustrators develop.”
