With an array of gems, booklets and interactive activity together with wonderful stories this is a gorgeous volume not to be missed. By the time you’ve swamped your mind with these wonderful creatures you will understand rather than fear them. Also available in the 'Ology' series are Dragonology, Pirateology, Wizardology, and Mythology.
A welcome return of a classic title which shows how the world was viewed by a different generation in the years following World War Two. Clarke Hutton’s lithographs take the reader on a journey of exploration through the new worlds as they were found from the time of the Phoenicians and Greeks though Sir Walter Raleigh’s discovery of the America, Captain Cook’s arrival in Australia and Captain Scott and Amundsen’s desperate race for the South Pole. The heroic stories will continue to delight a new generation and the old fashioned illustrations are full of period charm. From the same author who brought you A Picture History of Britain.
A gripping, fast-paced gothic mystery that will have readers aged about 10+ gasping for air but utterly spellbound to the words on the page. Mariah Mundi is an orphan but he’s also a magician’s assistant. Lurking amongst the magician’s equipment lurk dark and dangerous secrets; secrets in fact that draw Mariah into the path of villainy, plots and possible death.
A brilliant sequel to the best selling Aliens Love Underpants. This time there is more hilarious fun as the dinosaurs fight to the death over underpants. Envious of the cavemen’s pants, the dinosaurs get all knickers in a twist as they create a battle royal over the priceless objects…the bouncy rhyming text and ridiculous illustrations will keep everyone thoroughly entertained.
A fast-paced adventure of magic, mystery and enterprise. Girl goddess Kumari has only twenty-four hours to save Papa and her people in the Hidden Kingdom against the mysterious enemy who threatens them all. And Kumari is still learning how to make best use of her powers. Can she do it? Kumari is a gutsy heroine riding an entertaining roller coaster of life. The Lovereading comment: In this terrific blend of fantasy, drama, wit and adventure, Kumari the girl goddess, who we first met in the author’s striking debut Kumari Goddess of Gotham is once again forced to pit her wits against everyone in order to save her people against the enemy. With an original voice the author succeeds in engaging the reader, both through some page-turning suspense but also via a lightness of touch in the writing. A tender story with a big message. Two sisters playing by the pond find a magical tiny being complete with wings. It’s a bog baby and the two girls decide to take the best care of it that they can. But, when the bog baby becomes ill, they realize that they’ll have to let it go back to the wild. A beautiful story about the joy of caring but not shying away from the hardest part of it – letting go when the time comes. Winner of the 2008 Booktrust Early Years 'Pre-School Award'. The Lovereading comment: A wonderful new story from Jeanne Willis, the author that brought you Who's in the Loo? Ever heard if a Bog Baby before? Well it’s undersized and blue and has wings similar to that of a dragon. When two girls find it in a magical pond they wonder what to do with it. This book is hilarious, touchingly illustrated and there’s a good moral lesson at the end.
Scaredy Squirrel is back for a new adventure. This time, he tries to avoid a beach holiday. He knows the beach will be full of all sorts of undesirable things from packs of pirates to mobs of lobsters. But, when he finds himself there by mistake, he finds its loads off fun – especially the crowds of people. Danger, daring and dead bodies lie at the heart of this thrilling detective story. Skulduggery Pleasant, the DI whose name lives up to his looks, is back for a second set of hideous adventures. Now Baron Vengeous is out of prison…Can Skulduggery stop him from getting the deadly armour of Lord Vile? This book is the follow up to the author's debut novel Skulduggery Pleasant. The Lovereading comment:Skulduggery, the sharply-dressed skeleton detective is at it again in another startling and hilarious adventure in which Skulduggery, master of powerful magic, teams up with his sidekick to save the world. Problem: his sidekick is a 12-year-old girl. Once again Derek Landy has served up a roller-coaster ride of wit, skulduggery and magic, with brilliantly drawn characters and a plot-line that’s thicker than blood. Early Reader Review (Hugh 13). It's a brilliant follow-on to the first book and it picks up the story straight away. It ties up many loose ends from the first book but it also leaves many questions and it has set up a brilliant cliff-hanger for the third book to begin. The characters have been developed so well that they are almost real people. It is not all just magic and action, there are some hilarious lines that had me in fits of laughter. All in all I think it was a great book and I am looking forward to the sequel.
An absolute must for every early teenager. Fun, interesting and useful the author has compiled a great list of things to be sure to do before those early care free days – the childish wonder of innocence – are over and before your entire attention span becomes taken up with worrying about the opposite sex.
