Discussion Notes for Birdlands by Anthony McGowan

These discussion notes and activities are designed to help schools explore Birdlands by Anthony McGowan as a rich, engaging classroom read. Through the story of three very different birds on a difficult journey, pupils are encouraged to think about nature, survival, friendship, courage and the impact humans have on the natural world.

The pack supports discussion before, during and after reading, with prompts that develop prediction, inference, empathy and critical thinking. Creative activities invite pupils to investigate bird habitats, consider different perspectives, reflect on environmental responsibility and make links between the story and the real lives of wild birds.

Suitable for upper primary and lower secondary pupils, these notes can be used in English lessons, school libraries, book groups or as part of wider cross-curricular work across Science, Art and PSHE.
