David Solomons is a simply brilliant writer for children and his My Brother is a Super-Hero series is consistently funny, entertaining and true. Indeed, the further-fetched the stories get, the more rooted they are in real life. As fans know, Luke was cruelly robbed of the super-powers that should have been his when Zorbon the Decider bestowed them on his swotty big brother Zack. But now the situation is reversed (sort of) because on their way back from a parallel Earth, Zack and Luke swapped bodies – Luke’s 11 year old mind is in Zack’s 14 year old body, and vice versa. The stage is set for another hilarious but properly exciting story, situation comedy and mistaken identity gags sitting alongside super-hero in-jokes. It all comes to a climax at the wonderfully-named Great Minds Leisure Park, where Luke confronts a worthy arch-enemy!
July 2017 Book of the Month | A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month July 2017 Award-winning David Solomons’ hero Luke is back for a sizzling new adventure and this time he has acquired Stellar, a super-powered twin from another dimension. If a twin sounds like fun, think again. Stellar is super-cool with super-hero hair and rocket-powered shoes and Luke finds him exceptionally irritating. And he is sure he is up to no good. After all, Luke reasons, why would he travel out of his own dimension and across space if he didn’t have an evil plan? Luke’s schemes to bring down his evil twin are hilarious and predictably imaginative. ~ Julia Eccleshare The Editor at Nosy Crow says: “My Brother is a Superhero set the bar high, but this third in the quartet does not fall short – it’s just as crammed with laughs, adventure, wit and emotional depth. And Serge. Magnifique!” Julia Eccleshare's Picks of the Month for July 2017 What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks My Evil Twin is a Supervillain by David Solomons
July 2016 Book of the Month | In a nutshell : aliens invade Bromley The follow-up to David Solomon’s prize-winning sci-fi comedy My Brother is a Superhero delivers just as much in the way of tension, adventure and laughs. Still resentful of his now superhero big brother, Luke inadvertently gets his own back by revealing that sulky teen Cara is the kryptonite to Zack’s Superman. Unfortunately, this plays into the hands of aliens intent on invading Earth and forcing its inhabitants to watch reality TV for the rest of time. The action is as fast and funny as ever, and the in-jokes possibly even better. Young readers will love this and parents, it would make the perfect bedtime read – some of those jokes are too good just for the young! For more witty alien adventures, firmly rooted in family life, see Frank Cottrell Boyce’s The Astounding Broccoli Boy and Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth. ~ Andrea Reece The Editor at Nosy Crow says: “My Brother is a Superhero set the bar high, but this sequel does not fall short – it’s just as crammed with laughs, adventure, wit and emotional depth. And Serge. Magnifique!”
Children’s Book of the Year, The British Book Industry Awards 2016 - Overall winner of Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2016 - Shortlisted for The Branford Boase Award 2016. | Oh the anguish! Luke is a comic-reading super-hero expert, but he’s gone for a wee at the crucial moment when an alien arrives in his tree-house and it’s his never-read-a-comic-in-his-life brother Zach who gets superpowers and instructions to save the universe – life couldn’t get any unfairer. But even super-heroes need back up, and when Zach is kidnapped, it falls to Luke to save his brother and the world. This is an excellent adventure story with real heart, that’s also properly funny, with humour that comes from the characters as well as the situation. A sequel is promised and can’t come soon enough.
