Synopsis

Very Berry Christmas, A by David Fitzgerald

When a heavy snowdrift cuts off Mr Hedges from the local village, he attempts to make a Christmas tree in the garden. But despite his best efforts, it looks nothing like he had planned. He goes to bed with a heavy heart - for the very first time, he'll have no Christmas tree on Christmas Day. Determined to cheer up their friend, the birds in Mr Hedges' garden work throughout the night. -- Welsh Books Council

Reviews

Mr Hedges lives contentedly with his dog Meg in a little house in the Welsh countryside. Every day he and Meg go out into the garden to feed and water the birds that visit them, even when the snow is deep and still falling. When Mr Hedges realises that the snow is so deep that he and Meg will not be able to travel to the village to buy a tree for Christmas, he decides to decorate one of the trees outside the house. He just cannot make the tree look right, and on Christmas Eve he goes to bed feeling unhappy about it. But when Mr Hedges opens his bedroom curtains on Christmas morning he has a wonderful surprise waiting for him. This heart-warming story of kindness being repaid by kindness captures the real spirit of Christmas. The illustrations complement the story perfectly: Mr Hedges is kindly, Megs face reflects his moods, and the birds are bright-eyed and alert.Mari StrachanIt is possible to use this review for promotional purposes, but the following acknowledgment should be included: A review from www.gwales.com, with the permission of the Welsh Books Council.
