Dinosaurs and Dinner-Ladies by John Dougherty

The Lovereading4Kids comment

John Dougherty’s poetic debut ‘Dinosaurs & Dinner-Ladies’ is a collection of sheer brilliance with all the wit and charm we’ve come to expect from this popular fiction writer. Dougherty draws on his experiences as a teacher and captures school-life to perfection; full of classroom rivalries, first crushes, and of course dinosaurs, lions and rampant dinner-ladies. More impressive, is Dougherty’s ability to have readers on the floor with laughter in one moment, and deeply moved in another, without disrupting the natural flow of the collection. Poems ‘Olive Green’ and ‘Pink’ which warn against stereotyping based on race and gender are particularly memorable. This collection is as diverse in its’ style as its’ content, ranging from short haikus to lengthier short-story style poems, and the effortless rhymes throughout make it the perfect collection to read aloud and to return to time after time. An exuberant, emotive and first-class debut.
