Hiding Hopcyn by Eiry Palfrey

Hiding Hopcyn by Eiry Palfrey

A legend from mid-Wales about Melangell who saves a hare from the hunting hounds of Brochwel.

As a young girl, Melangell gave her life to God by taking care of Pennant Forest in Powys, where she spoke to the animals and used her magic powers to care for them. This retelling of her legend is seen from the point of view of the animals in the forest, who love her. Hopcyn the Hare is the shyest of all the animals, and he cant bring himself to approach Melangell. And then, one day, he is chased by Prince Brochwels fierce hunting dogs ... This English translation of the Welsh text is ideal for reading to young children. The pace is exciting, and there is plenty to discuss beyond the text, to encourage childrens awareness of their environment. The illustrations complement the story: the animals are appealing, the hounds scary, Melangell and Prince Brochwel both attractive and expressive.
