Hector Dexet is an illustrator whose bold and bright graphic style makes his work perfect for toddlers and young readers. Hector stepped into the spotlight to tell us more about his art and influences.

"Originally from France, I have been an illustrator since 2012. For the past 8 years, I have had the privilege of working around the globe. As a nomadic illustrator, much like a hermit crab, I frequently change my workspace. This lifestyle has allowed me to draw inspiration from a diverse array of landscapes and cultures.

I came across the world of children's literature relatively late, around the age of 30. I never imagined that this discovery could turn into my profession!

If I were to name the artists who have inspired me, I would mention Paul Rand, Lela Mari, and especially Bruno Munari’s book-objects. Munari’s work, in particular, I believe, paved the way for an entire generation of young illustrators."

I would describe my style as colourful, cheerful, and playful – a blend of creativity, pedagogy, and fun. I aim to surprise and awaken the curiosity of young readers by offering books that go beyond simple reading and become interactive experiences or game books. I like the idea that books can compete with screens in terms of interactivity by featuring surprising cutouts, mysterious flaps to lift, and phosphorescent inks that reveal secrets in the dark.

When I design a book, I always imagine the experience of the child who will handle it: how they will interact with the object, touch it, and discover it. My approach is constantly guided by the desire to make exploration playful; each page becomes a gateway to the imagination. From the cover, I strive to capture the young reader’s attention and integrate the cover into the narrative, clearly indicating that it is an interactive book designed to be fun and engaging.

I also try to make the books as universal and accessible as possible.

Each new project begins in a hands-on way, starting with a simple paper mock-up, a pencil, and scissors. I cut, fold, and glue, experimenting with shapes and volumes to bring my ideas to life. This manual phase is crucial, as it allows me to translate my imagination into a tangible form before finalizing everything on my graphic tablet.

Who Ate the Little Bug? is one of my first books. Without revealing the ending, all I can say is that it has a happy conclusion for the little creature!

I always have several projects in progress, but my next book, Little Seed, will soon be released in the UK. It is a book that falls between a picture book and a documentary, presenting the life cycle of a seed—from germination to its transformation into a giant sunflower—in a poetic and playful manner. This book took me a bit longer to create than usual and is one of my favourites. I hope young readers will enjoy it! "
