In a nutshell: a beautiful old school is the setting for a story of magic, mystery and redemption | There’s a world within a world for readers to explore in The White Tower. Livy is upset when her father gets a job as librarian at Temple College as it means she will start too as a pupil. She’d rather stay at her old school, even though there she’s haunted by the absence of her best friend, who died tragically the previous term. Temple College has its own links with the past and its own strange history, personified by the row of stone angels who gaze down on the pupils from its rooves. Livy is drawn to the angels and high up with them discovers old secrets, which promise escape, even the overthrow of physical laws. This magical mystery story is rich in atmosphere, tinged with grief and recovery, and will entrance readers from ten and up.

This is one to recommend to fans of Eva Ibbotson and Katherine Rundell and readers will also enjoy atmospheric school stories such as Esme Kerr’s The Glass Bird Girl. ~ Andrea Reece

A Piece of Passion from Barry Cunningham, Publisher, Chicken House ‘I’ve always dreamt of flying – haven’t we all? – but what if that dream was rooted in an ancient memory, or a lost piece of knowledge? What if, once, people had been able to fly, but the secret was buried in old science and forgotten magic? Livy heads into her new school with only the vaguest hints of what’s hidden amongst its soaring towers and secret rooms. And what’s at stake is more than forbidden knowledge: it’s solving an unhappy mystery from the past and finding peace in the present. The White Tower is thrilling, fascinating and so, so magical!’

Alchemy meets dreamy reality in this new atmospheric adventure from the author of the bestselling debut, The Wolf Princess.

When Livy's accepted at Temple College, a school for the very brightest, no one is more surprised than her, though she has always felt different. Recently, Livy's been drawn to the roof, where, among its towering stone angels, she has the strangest desire to fly. But her behaviour is noticed by others, for whom the ability to defy gravity is a possible reality that they'll stop at nothing to use for their own ends.
