The Lovereading4Kids comment

Murray comes from a family of champion racehorses and dreams of winning trophies. But there’s a problem: he’s just not fast. The other horses laugh at him until one amazing day his dreams come true, though in a totally unexpected way! Murray’s unusual chorus-line-to-star story is told in rhyme, and rather brings to mind the comic monologues made famous by Stanley Holloway. The verse is certainly great fun to read aloud and will be fun for children to memorise too. Jolly black and white illustrations make this even more appealing. ~ Andrea Reece

Synopsis

Murray the Horse by Gavin Puckett

Murray the horse dreams of winning big races just like the rest of his family but he has one problem - he's just not that fast! When horse Ned Plumb twists his ankle at the start line, his jockey spots Murray in the crowd and says, 'Fancy a race?' Murray finally gets his chance to shine and beat the neigh-sayers with a rather unusual race technique...

Written in winning verse, the accessible, bonkers writing in Murray the Horse will charm boys and girls age 7-11 (and horse-lovers of all ages), and is complemented by Frank Rodgers' modern classic black-and-white line illustrations, and has a great message about believing in yourself and following your dreams.

About the Author

Gavin Puckett lives in South Wales with his wife, his young son and their cat, George. He spends his days working as a school liaison officer with the police and won the Greenhouse Funny Prize in 2013 with his debut book, Murray the Horse.

He has since gone on to write more horsey adventures as part of a humorous rhyming series called ‘Fables from the Stables.’ When he’s not writing, he spends most of his time thinking of things to write, taking penalty shots against his football-mad son and spelling his last name to people. His favourite word is bibliobibuli and he was once bitten by a squirrel when he was twelve.
