The Lovereading4Kids comment

In tender, memorable lines of verse, and exquisite watercolour illustrations, this beautiful picture book describes the journeys of small creatures making their way through dangerous wintery landscapes to the safety and warmth of home. There’s a pressing sense of urgency that gives way to the peace and stillness of the last pages, home safely reached, but even there the past page reminds us that the road too can be home when you travel with loved ones. The little birds and mice reach safety, we can’t help at these times but think of all those human families looking for a safe home in our dangerous world. ~ Andrea Reece

Synopsis

The Road Home by Katie Cotton

'For safety is a precious place, a place to call our own. This road is hard, this road is long, this road that leads us home.'

As winter approaches, a bird flees with her chick, a mouse builds a nest for her child and rabbits run from wolves that roam in the darkening woods. The road home is long and hard, but the animals have each other in this poetic meditation on nature, survival and love.

To help you enjoy and explore the story further we have some thought provoking discussion notes to download.
