An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?

An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?

Author: Immanuel Kant Narrator: Matt Larsen Release Date: 01/06/2021

'Answering the Question: What Is Enlightenment?' is a 1784 essay by the philosopher Immanuel Kant. In the December 1784 publication of the Berlinische Monatsschrift (Berlin Monthly), edited by Friedrich Gedike and Johann Erich Biester, Kant replied to the question posed a year earlier by the Reverend Johann Friedrich Zöllner, who was also an official in the Prussian government. Zöllner's question was addressed to a broad intellectual public community, in reply to Biester's essay entitled: 'Proposal, not to engage the clergy any longer when marriages are conducted' (April 1783) and a number of leading intellectuals replied with essays, of which Kant's is the most famous and has had the most impact. Kant's opening paragraph of the essay is a much-cited definition of a lack of enlightenment as people's inability to think for themselves due not to their lack of intellect, but lack of courage. Kant's essay also addressed the causes of a lack of enlightenment and the preconditions necessary to make it possible for people to enlighten themselves. He held it necessary that all church and state paternalism be abolished and people be given the freedom to use their own intellect. Kant praised Frederick II of Prussia for creating these preconditions. Kant focused on religious issues, saying that 'our rulers' had less interest in telling citizens what to think in regard to artistic and scientific issues.

Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung? (Ungekürzt)

Author: Immanuel Kant Narrator: Heiner Lamprecht Release Date: 01/01/2021

Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals

Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals

Author: Immanuel Kant Narrator: John Riddle Release Date: 01/08/2020

Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785; German: Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten; also known as the Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals, Grounding of the Metaphysics of Morals, and the Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals) is the first of Immanuel Kant's mature works on moral philosophy and remains one of the most influential in the field. Kant conceives his investigation as a work of foundational ethics—one that clears the ground for future research by explaining the core concepts and principles of moral theory, and showing that they are normative for rational agents. Kant purposes to lay bare the fundamental principle of morality and show that it applies to us. Central to the work is the role of what Kant refers to as the categorical imperative, the concept that one must act only according to that precept which he or she would will to become a universal law. He provides a groundbreaking argument that the rightness of an action is determined by the principle that a person chooses to act upon. This stands in stark contrast to the moral sense theories and teleological moral theories that dominated moral philosophy at the time of Kant's career. The Groundwork is broken into a preface, followed by three sections. Kant's argument works from common reason up to the supreme unconditional law, in order to identify its existence. He then works backwards from there to prove the relevance and weight of the moral law. The book is famously obscure, and it is partly because of this that Kant later, in 1788, decided to publish the Critique of Practical Reason.

Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten

Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten

Author: Immanuel Kant Narrator: Patrick Beck Release Date: 01/05/2020

Kant’s Foundations of Ethics

Kant’s Foundations of Ethics

Author: Immanuel Kant Narrator: Albert A. Anderson Release Date: 01/04/2020

These works articulate the most fundamental principles of Kant’s ethical and political world-view. 'What is Enlightenment?' (1784) and 'Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals' (1785) challenge all free people to think about the requirements for self-determination both in our individual lives and in our public and private institutions. Kant’s 'Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals' is dedicated to the proposition that all people can know what they need to know to be honest, good, wise, and virtuous. The purpose of Kant’s moral philosophy is to help us become aware of the principles that are already contained within us. Innocence and dependence must be replaced with wisdom and good will if we are to avoid being vulnerable and misguided. According to Kant, freedom of thought leads naturally to freedom of action. When that happens, governments begin to treat human beings, not as machines, but as persons with dignity. Immanuel Kant begins 'Toward Lasting Peace' by contrasting the realism of practical politicians with the high-minded theories of philosophers who 'dream their sweet dreams.' His opening line provides a grim reminder that the only alternative to finding a way to avoid the war of each against all is the lasting peace of the graveyard. The advent of total war and the development of nuclear weapons in the twentieth century give Kant’s reflections an urgency he could not have anticipated. Kant published this work in 1795, during the aftermath of the American Revolution and the French Revolution. The high hopes of the European Enlightenment had been dampened by the Reign of Terror in which tens of thousands of people died, and the perpetual cycle of war and temporary armistice seemed to be inescapable. Kant’s essay is best known as an early articulation of the idea of a league of nations that could bring 'an end to all hostilities.' Today The United Nations continues to pursue that dream, but lasting peace still seems to be wishful thinking.
