Many of the earliest stories about boys and wolves are found in Aesop's fables, and it is likely that this was Prokofiev's source for the story. Prokofiev was excited to have been asked to compose this piece by Moscow Central Children's Theatre director Natalya Sats, finishing it in just a few short weeks ahead of its Moscow premiere in May 1936. 'We must start with something specific, something full of contrasts, something that makes a strong impression,' he told her. 'The most important thing is to find a common language with the children.' Prokofiev had a lifelong love of fairy stories, myths and folklore and threw himself into the fantasy world of Peter and the Wolf. It has been recorded over 400 times, with a variety of narrators, and has introduced millions of children to the wonders of classical music. First broadcast December 2000. "Peter's grandfather admonishes Peter not to play in the forest as there may be wolves. Peter's friend the duck was in the forest when a wolf came and swallowed him. Peter climbs a tree and caught the wolf by the tail with a rope. While dangling from the tree the wolf coughs up the duck. Peter then asks the hunters to help him take the wolf to the zoo instead of shooting him."

"Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) had a lifelong attraction to children's stories. By far the best known of all his music inspired by children's literature is Peter and the Wolf. Prokofiev was asked to write a piece that would introduce young audiences to the workings of an orchestra and its instruments. Peter and the Wolf showcases the composer's superb ability to bring a simple story to life, giving each character a recognizable motive and instrumental colour. The story is about the young boy Peter who, together with his friend the bird, manages to catch a hungry wolf who has come to his garden, looking for food and chasing all the animals, including a duck who he manages to swallow. After the wolf has been caught with a lasso, hunters arrive, intending to shoot him. Instead, Peter proposes to bring him to the zoo, and the hunters, Peter, his grandfather and the animals form a procession to deliver the wolf."
