Shortlisted for the UKLA 2018 Book Award | A brilliantly funny take on fairytales and quests. Lovereading comment to follow. Garth Nix said: “Frogkisser! is one of those novels that just bubble out of the imagination and demand to be written all at once and won’t permit anything else to get in the way. I am delighted that my various publishers have all responded to the book with as much exuberance as I felt while I was writing it.”
The long awaited prequel to the original ‘The Old Kingdom’ trilogy will cause glee for fans, as it lays down a satisfying foundation for the stories yet to come in this spellbinding and different world. If you haven't yet ventured into this fantasy kingdom, you can read this as a standalone novel, once you do though, you may find yourself wanting to travel six hundred years into the future to catch up. This really does feel as though history is being laid before your feet and there is quite a lot of scene setting before the action really starts. Clariel is a fascinating character, she doesn't yet fully understand herself and it’s very easy to empathise with the path she begins to forge. If you do already know this world, there will be several moments of recognition and understanding to greet you! ~ Liz Robinson This is the long-awaited prequel to Garth Nix's wonderfully imaginative Old Kingdom series. You don't have to have read the Old Kingdom books, Clariel works perfectly as a stand-alone story, but if you want to, all The Old Kingdom books are now available in ebook form... Inspired by the works of Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen, Garth Nix's Newt's Emerald is a light hearted Regency romance with a fantasy twist. She quickly learns, however, that a woman cannot wander the city streets alone without damaging her reputation, and she disguises herself as a moustache-wearing man. During Truthful's dangerous journey she discovers a crook, an unsuspecting ally, and an evil sorceress but will she find the Emerald?
Brilliantly funny adventure, featuring magic, dragons and knights. For Fans of Shrek. Odo (seventh child of the village miller) and Eleanor (always looking for adventure) stumble upon a sword in a dried-up river outside their village. Eleanor (strong and able) tries to extract the sword but is unable to, and it is Odo who is surprisingly successful. It is even more surprising that the sword, once pulled out, starts to talk. And rather annoying when the talking sword turns out to be rather grumpy, stubborn, and, at times, catastrophically wrong. Odo and Eleanor have unearthed Biter, a famous knightly sword from earlier times. By finding Biter, Odo instantly becomes a knight -- a role he is exquisitely unsuited for. Eleanor, however, is desperate to become and would be the perfect knight -- but she's not the one with the sword. Finding Biter is only the start - reluctant knight, reluctant squire, and determined sword must go on a quest to save their kingdom from threats in both human and dragon form, in this new very funny fantasy triumph from Garth Nix and Sean Williams.
Brilliantly funny adventure for boys and girls, featuring magic, sword action and knights For fans of Shrek Odo and Eleanor are now officially knights, helped (and sometimes hindered) by their magical but rather difficult to control magical swords. But if they thought life as a knight was going to be easy, they are wrong! Before they know it, their first task is to tackle some ferocious bile wolves! A funny fantasy triumph from Garth Nix and Sean Williams, the perfect sequel to Have Sword, Will Travel.
