Great Dixter Then & Now

Author: Christopher Lloyd, Carol Casselden, Fergus Garrett Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 04/02/2021

Christopher Lloyd, icon and iconoclast of the gardening world, was born at Great Dixter, in East Sussex, in 1921 and died there in 2006. In the years between he developed the garden at Dixter into a mecca for plantsmen and a hub of ideas and connections that spread throughout the world. And from the 1930s almost until his death he was also photographing the garden, recording it in intimate detail as it changed and developed. A carefully chosen selection of Christopher's photographs is published here, the majority for the first time. They are juxtaposed with images from the Lloyd family's earliest days at Dixter, and with photographs taken by Carol Casselden and others of the garden as it is today.

Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Drawings

Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Drawings

Author: Christopher Lloyd Format: Hardback Release Date: 29/08/2019

Manet, Pissarro, Morisot, Cezanne, Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh and their colleagues made some of the most beautiful drawings in the history of art. This book sets drawings by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists in the context of late nineteenth-century France and explains why these particular works are as important as their paintings in the representation of modernity. A new approach to materials and a wholly inclusive attitude to exhibitions gave drawings a more elevated status in this period than ever before, which avant-garde artists welcomed in their preference for scenes from contemporary life. For the first time also, painting and drawing shared the same stylistic principles of spontaneity, freer handling and lack of finish. Pastels by Degas, watercolors by Cezanne, pen-and-ink drawings by Van Gogh and mixed media works by Toulouse-Lautrec have an autonomy of their own, which proved instrumental in the development of modern art. The distinguished art historian Christopher Lloyd examines the drawings of twenty of the leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, highlighting an aspect of French avant-garde art that remains relatively unexplored and was of immense importance for the art movements that followed

Cezanne Drawings and Watercolours

Cezanne Drawings and Watercolours

Author: Christopher Lloyd Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 25/07/2019

Drawing was central to Cezanne's indefatigable search for solutions to the problems posed by the depiction of reality. Many of his watercolours are equal to his paintings, and he himself made no real distinction between painting and drawing. This book's six chapters are arranged thematically covering the whole range of Cezanne's oeuvre: works after the Old Masters such as Michelangelo and Rubens; his period as one of the Impressionists; his exploration of both portraiture and the human figure, including the magnificent bathers; his interaction with landscape, particularly in his native Provence and the dominating form of Mont Sainte-Victoire; and finally the magisterial still lifes. In the Introduction, as well as throughout the book, Lloyd sets the drawings and watercolours in the context of Cezanne's life and overall artistic development. The result is a greater understanding of the process that led to some of the most absorbing art ever produced.

The Health of Seamen

The Health of Seamen

Author: Christopher Lloyd Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 29/04/2019

The second half of the eighteenth century saw dramatic improvements in the health of the Royal Navy and, as a result, an enhanced capacity to fight and to successfully impose tight blockades. The menace of scurvy was tamed through improved diet and the use of citrus juice; and smallpox stopped in its tracks by a prompt programme of vaccination following the findings of Edward Jenner. The causes of typhus and malaria remained a mystery, but strides were made in containing these diseases by developing rigorous systems to control their spread. This volume comprises extracts from the extensive writings of the three medical men who made major contributions to these improvements and, indeed, chronicled their progress. They were - James Lind, who was active from the 1740s, became the first Physician of Haslar Hospital and was truly regarded as the father of naval medicine - even if his role in the conquest of scurvy was later exaggerated; Gilbert Blane, Physician to Fleet of Lord Rodney and a Commissioner of Sick and Hurt from 1795; and Thomas Trotter, naval surgeon, Physician at Haslar, and then Physician to the Channel Fleet 1794-1802. The works of these men can now only be found in specialist libraries or at considerable cost. This volume therefore comprises a valuable addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in naval medicine.
