Find out moreJennifer Gray is a lawyer and writer. Jennifer's other work includes the Guinea Pigs Online series for younger readers, and a new series for 7+, Chicken Mission. Her Atticus Claw books have been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and received numerous great reviews - especially from children! She lives in London and Scotland with her husband and four children, and of course Henry, a friendly but enigmatic cat.
Ermine is a stoat-ally adorable heroine – smart, independent but child-like, she enjoys nothing more than exploring new cities and making new friends. Fresh from a sojourn in New York, she arrives in Sydney to stay with the city’s star opera singer, though she’s mostly in the company of the diva’s granddaughter Butterfly. The two have great fun together – though only Ermine’s quick thinking and quicker fingers save them from falling from the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge! A run in with a ruthless rival in the finals of Australia’s Most Awesome Animal Show allows for more excitement and comedy too. Jennifer Gray’s sprightly storytelling packs a huge amount into the short extent, and there’s lots readers will relish. Elisa Paganelli’s illustrations give Ermine the look of Audrey Hepburn, and this is a thoroughly stylish, well turned-out series.
In a nutshell: stoat-ally wonderful story; friendship, fun, upsets Young readers will love Ermine, star of this new series by Atticus Claw author Jennifer Gray. Ermine is a stoat which, in fictional terms, gives her carte blanche to behave as both adult and child: she’s independent enough to travel around solo but, like a child, ignorant of how the adult world works. As guest of Michael S Megabucks and his young son, Ermine is looking forward to exploring New York but a mix up at the airport means that she accidentally leaves with a priceless stolen diamond. Crooks Harry and Barry Spudd are no match for Ermine and the lively, fast-moving adventure that follows is full of slapstick humour, while giving readers a real sense of New York too. At the end Ermine is packing her bags for Sydney and it will be well worth tagging along for more fun and adventure. Highly illustrated by Elisa Paganelli this is great for newly independent readers, who will also enjoy the equally cosmopolitan Violet stories by Harriet Whitehorn and Alex T. Smith’s new series Mr Penguin. ~ Andrea Reece
Fans will be delighted to find this new adventure for Atticus Claw, the deservedly popular cat burglar turned crime solver. And what an adventure it is! Helping tidy out the attic at the Littleton-on-Sea home for abandoned cats, Atticus finds a mysterious box. It apparently belonged to a real life explorer and could be the clue to lost Mayan treasure. Of course there’s nothing our Atticus likes more than a mystery – and the cats’ home could certainly do with a boost of funds – so in less than two shakes of a cat’s tail he’s on the case! Clever detective he may be, but Atticus is cat through and through; Gray skilfully maintains the balance between animal and mystery story and keeps the story believable no matter how exotic the plot gets. Great fun, another cat-tastic adventure! ~ Andrea Reece
Atticus Claw, hugely popular cat-burglar turned good guy, is back for another adventure, with a decidedly seasonal flavour. The Cheddar family have been invited to spend Hogmanay in a castle in Scotland, and Atticus is going with them. What’s more, his friends Bones and Mimi are going too. It sounds like the purr-fect way to welcome in the New Year, but strange things are going on at Biggnaherry Castle, and Atticus is going to need all his detective skills to work it out. Atticus is a skilful detective and, as ever, there’s a satisfying mystery at the heart of the story. There’s lots of humour too, and an appealing cast of characters, human and animal – in fact, it’s the cat’s whiskers! ~ Andrea Reece
