Find out moreWhen Nicola was 5 years old her parents banned Saturday morning television, and she has been drawing ever since. Nicola grew up in Singapore surrounded by the vibrant colours of the tropics and had not even heard of illustration as a career before she discovered the Illustration course at Edinburgh College of Art. Having graduated from ECA, Nicola has now completed a Masters in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art, as well as pursuing a career in children's book illustration. She gets most of her ideas for children's books when she should be working on something else, and bases all of her characters on people she knows.
Longlisted for the UKLA Book Awards 2020 | Rabbit realises that he doesn’t have to go to bed until it is dark. If it never gets dark, he won’t ever have to go to bed. It is easy to lure the Dark into the biscuit tin but the consequences aren’t what Rabbit expected. The pictures and text together build a charming allegory about the importance of thinking beyond our immediate pleasures.
Everything is about to change ... Bear is moving home. Bear and Dad are moving. But as they leave their old home behind and set off on their long drive towards the new, Bear is full of questions... But Bear's dad reassures her with wise and comforting words and, by the end of their journey from the city to the country, Bear comes to realize: just as long as she is with her dad, she will always be at home. From the creator of Open Very Carefully, Nicola O'Byrne, comes a tender, touching story that voices all the worries a child has about change, and celebrates the loving bond between father and daughter.
In this unique interactive book, with brilliantly designed die-cut pages, children are encouraged to take part in the story, to create a door in the page and use their imagination to guide Carter into new environments, from stormy seas to hot deserts and icy lands. Carter, the crocodile hero of Open Very Carefully, is back and he's NOT happy. All he wants to do is find his way home, but he can't get there by himself - he needs YOUR help! But will that cranky croc and the little friends he's made along the way ever find their way home?
You could say that this picture book is all about being proud of who you are and recognising people’s individual talents and interests. But really it’s a celebration of the delights of cakes and baking, and all the better for it. Flamie Oliver might be enormous and terrifying enough to win a place at the Ferocious Dragon Academy – for dragons very, very good at being very, very bad – but his real passion is baking. Presented with a princess to eat he ends up creating a feast with her, rather than featuring her. A fun story and Bake Off jokes are scattered throughout like glacé cherries in a fruit cake making this a tasty treat for fans of the series. ~ Andrea Reece
A familiar fairy tale is turned topsy-turvy when Cinderella hijacks the story of The Three Little Pigs, then Little Red Riding Hood jumps in, adamant that her story is better because it's full of danger. And then the Big Bad Wolf turns up too! But disaster strikes! Uh-oh! What will they do? The reader is still awake and needs a story! The characters make up their own story, of course, and one with enough funniness, romance, danger AND cake (obviously) to keep everyone happy.
Rabbit and Wolf make dangerous playmates. But Rabbit is bored and Wolf comes up with the brilliant idea that Rabbit should write a story. Everything goes very well. Wolf is very helpful. But Wolf is also very hungry…and the story looks as if it may end in a bad way. But luckily, Rabbit knows how to use his imagination…A witty story with a clever ending.
