Hannah Pang – Wilderness – Author Q & A
Q&A: What inspired you to become an author?
My strongest memory goes back to a writing competition we had at primary school. I wrote an animal story and just get kept going for days while all of the other children got on with the normal classroom activities (I won so I was quite chuffed!). I always remember people giving me exercise books as a child, which I used to fill with stories – I remember writing one about a giant red turnip (probably inspired by Roald Dahl).
Q&A: Have you always been interested in the natural world?
Yes, I grew up surrounded by animals – we even had pet sheep and a goat in the garden! I also kept snails under the bed and I remember keeping a chrysalis in a jar on top of the fridge and my parents waking me in the night to watch a butterfly hatch from it. I also kept some tadpoles in the kitchen but never did find out what happened to the froglets – I think a cat or a plughole might have been involved…
Q&A: What’s the most interesting fact you discovered whilst writing Wilderness?
I think it has to be the one about the the ant-eating assassin bug, which piles dead ants onto its body to scare away predators! I always find insects so fascinating – they’re a bit like mini aliens.
Q&A: If you could be any animal what would you be and why?
In a geeky way, I’ve always wanted to be asked this question! It most definitely has to be a cat – they get to eat, play, sleep and be cuddled all day – and don’t even have to work for it! Or maybe they do – they’re natural born charmers!
September 2018 Non-Fiction Book of the Month | This sumptuous book, packed with gorgeous full and double-page illustrations by Thomas Hegbrook, will appeal to a very broad audience. Its subject – of course – is the Moon, our nearest and most familiar neighbour in space, and a source of fascination to mankind for thousands of years. Chapters cover both what we know of the moon, and what we’ve imagined; there are detailed and fascinating explanations of the moon’s physical relationship to Earth, and lots too on the Apollo missions and space exploration. Also included are different cultures’ moon myths, and examples of the beautiful poetry it has inspired. And there are quirky, unexpected facts – it seems the moon really can affect our behaviour for example. A book to intrigue and inform.
The wonderful world of animals is explored across seven different habitats in this eye-catching book. Each page is beautifully illustrated in full colour and features a range of animals, birds, plants and insects, familiar ones and the less well known, alongside panels of short but informative text. Readers are often challenged directly, ‘Did you know …’ and with flaps to lift, wheels to turn – one cleverly demonstrates the lifecycle of a butterfly, another that of the frog – and even a pop up mountain, this will hold and keep young readers’ attention. ~ Andrea Reece
For centuries, mankind has gazed up at the Moon in awe and wonder. It has been a source of both aspiration and inspiration to astronomers, poets, mathematicians and artists alike. But how much do we know about our closest neighbour? In this book, you'll discover the history of man's relationship with the Moon - the science, the myths, the facts and the fiction - and how it affects our everyday lives and the world around us.
From ants to whales and orang-utans to octopuses, get the lowdown on amazing animals from around the world. Including a range of habitats and packed with facts, flaps and interactive elements, Wilderness will open up the animal kingdom to every curious explorer.
