Floppit the boingy bunny will win the hearts of young readers, who will identify completely with his boundless energy; they’ll laugh too at the exasperation and weariness shown by the various grown up animals he disturbs with his bouncing. Poor Cow is teaching her babies to walk for example, and Chicken is guarding her eggs. But when one of the eggs rolls away, only Floppit is speedy enough to catch it. It’s a lively, thoroughly enjoyable story made extra special by Anna Chernyshova’s illustrations which are full of detail, texture and humour – the expression on the little calf’s face alone is worth the cover price, while Floppit is a fluffy rabbit whirlwind. Exellent farmyard fun. ~ Andrea Reece
The story of Little Red Riding Hood gets an inventive, original reworking in this lively picture book. Little Red Reading Hood is never happier than with her nose in a book – and that’s not a typo, Reading is definitely this little girl’s middle name. Taking a book back to the library she runs into the Big Bad Wolf and, ignoring her mother’s warning to stay on the path, lets him persuade her to stop and read for a bit. He meanwhile dashes ahead to the library and ties up the librarian. Red is set to end up as a tasty snack until she suggests to the wolf that he rewrite the ending of this particular story. Written in cheerful verse and splendidly illustrated by Ben Mantle, this celebration of stories and the imagination is great fun to read aloud and perfect for sharing.
Pirates are always popular subjects for picture books and by ingeniously combining a pirate story with a pair of yucky smelly feet, Mark Chambers and Lucy Rowland have upped the satisfaction levels even higher. Poor Pirate Pete’s feet are so stinky that his crew are finally driven to chuck him overboard (though within swimming distance of a desert island). They happily take him back though when his pongy feet turn out to be an effective shark repellent. The story is told in vigorous rhyme – ‘Standing slightly upwind, the pirates all grinned, “Three cheers for Pete’s foul-smelling feet’ – and the illustrations are full of fun too, look out for the sock hidden on each page. And if all this isn’t enough there’s a free set of scratch and sniff stickers too. Pooh! ~ Andrea Reece
A very small but very brave Gecko needs to think up a way of protecting her gecko eggs from nasty predators. How can she trick Snakey and Rat into thinking that she is not alone? Clever gecko comes up with a plan just using her voice and the amazing echo of the cave she lives in. A neatly told story of well-used cunning told in rhyming verses. ~ Julia Eccleshare There's a fun activity pack to accompany this book, with puzzles and colouring pages - download it here.
