Horrible Science author, Nick Arnold, has been writing books and stories since he was a lad. Even in those days his favourite subjects for stories were horrible goings-on, the more gruesome the better! So you see, he hasn't changed a bit!
Nick's first published books appeared when he was working at the University of North London on a project teaching children about nature. This led to a magazine article and then, one day, Nick had a brilliant idea. He said to himself:
"If I can write newspaper articles, then I can write books for other publishers too!"
Doing exactly what it says on the tin, Nick Arnold’s book presents children with 88 different scientific challenges spread across brightly coloured, busy pages and grouped according to nine different themes, including air experiments, energy and sound experiments, body experiments and force experiments. Each page explains what is needed, and poses questions for children to answer after completing the experiment, testing their understanding. There are ‘what’s next’ challenges too encouraging readers to develop the experiments further. The intriguing half an experiment is a science surprise that will fascinate everyone, whatever their age! An appealing and effective hands-on information book.~ Andrea Reece
Winner of the Best Book with Facts in the 2013 Blue Peter Book Awards. House of Horrors lifts the roof on the disgusting details of domestic life as only Horrible Science. 9-12 years. For everyone who has enjoyed the many ‘Horrible Science’ titles, this is a packed single volume touching on everything from Bloodthirsty Bugs to the Unbelievable Universe. Knowing their audience well, Nick Arnold and Tony de Saulles revel in the gruesome details – there are lots of gory pictures full of dripping blood - but not at the expense of making sure the science is accurate and comprehensible. Very much a first introduction rather than an in-depth study, this provides a useful resource to short circuit all those ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions.
