Tammy grew up in the small town of MacArthur, West Virginia. For generations, the men in her family worked in coal mines, but, unlike many women at this time in history, her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother also worked outside the home. She was a first-generation college graduate of Marshall University and later earned her Ed.D. from University of Virginia. Most of Tammy's teaching and administrative career was spent in Virginia, where she and her former husband raised four boys. She now has eight grandchildren. Life changes brought her back home to West Virginia where she teaches third grade students to read and write with understanding and passion.
