The School Library Association (SLA) has revealed the first details of its much-anticipated 2026 Conference, themed Changing Narratives. Taking place from Friday 5th to Saturday 6th June at the West Downs Centre, Winchester University, the event promises to be an inspiring gathering for all those working in and with school libraries.
The theme recognises the often negative stories surrounding children’s reading, learning, and wellbeing. The conference will explore how school libraries and school librarians can challenge these narratives, providing a vital antidote to the challenges school communities face today.
2026 SLA Conference Programme Highlights
Jamie Smart announced as guest speaker
The bestselling comic book creator will be sharing insights into the phenomenal rise in popularity of comics and graphic novels. The conference will consider how librarians, teachers, and parents can harness children’s enthusiasm for these titles to boost reading engagement and enjoyment.
Jonathan Douglas CBE to speak
In the middle of the #NationalYearofReading, delegates will also hear from Jonathan Douglas CBE, who will present critical insights into the current reading landscape, supported by the latest research from the National Literacy Trust and beyond.
Why attend the SLA Conference?
The SLA aims to bring together librarians, educators, and advocates for reading to consider what it truly means to be a reader today, and how their work can ensure that the next generation has the confidence, skills, and opportunities to reach its full potential.
