A lively, stimulating and inspiring read – the book we all need in our lives right now
September 2019 Book of the Month
From its dedication to Sir David Attenborough – ‘the most awesome human who has ever lived’ – this brilliant information book strikes exactly the right note, laying out the huge problems we and our planet are facing from plastic but at the same time showing us how we can change our behaviour to really make a difference, while still living a fun and happy life. Author, former McFly and Busted member Dougie Poynter makes sure the tone is friendly and accessible, while keeping a focus on the big issues, and what we need to do about them. He’s invited contributions from a range of scientist and campaigners, who all show that taking action is far more doable than we think. It makes for really lively, stimulating and inspiring reading, the kind of book we all need in our lives right now.
Talking about finding his inspiration for the book, Dougie says, “Conservation has been a huge part of my life since I first learnt about deforestation at school. The problem that I instantly found with being educated about something like that is that there wasn’t anything I could do about it. Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world with my band and some of the sights we have seen were heart-breaking. The planet is an absolute mess and needs a big old clean up. I’ve been working with the WWF for about six years now, initially with Mountain Gorillas and I have since been focussing my attention on the oceans, plastic and recycling. “After a lot of research and campaigning to get harmful products banned, I learnt that the most impactful thing we could do was educate the next generation. I really believe we can get the earth back on track. What I plan to do with the book is to debunk a lot of rumours that may be out there and offer positive solutions. I am very excited to be working with Macmillan and to be joining forces, to get everyone involved in our effort to make a difference to the planet.”
How can YOU help save our planet? This awesome and inspiring guide, written by musician and environmental activist Dougie Poynter, will show you how to get involved in the mission to cut out single-use plastic.
Plastic is everywhere and it sucks. It fills up our oceans, endangers our wildlife and never goes away. So it's time to take action, find ways to cut down our plastic use and help protect our environment. Together we can make a difference!
As a lifelong supporter of environmental causes and a key player in the campaign to ban microbeads in the UK, Dougie is always on the hunt for ways to reduce and replace plastic. This campaigning book, his first solo authored project, draws on his own experiences in the fight against plastic waste - the problems he's encountered and the solutions he's found. It covers the history of plastic, introduces us to some key campaigners and eco entrepreneurs and is full of top tips and infographics. The clear and easy steps in Plastic Sucks! You Can Make a Difference show us how we can all make small changes and become champions for our planet.
