Imagine meeting a hammerhead shark on a cruise! Well, now you don’t have to imagine because the incomparable Jeanne Willis has done it for us. Sadly, the young boy at the centre of her new picture book observes his fellow passengers and crew being rather mean to his friend the shark, even though Mark is perfectly lovely.
The same happens on a trip ashore but Mark is able to prove his noble qualities when the boat taking everyone back to the ship hits a reef. There are messages about not making judgements based on prejudice, and about how even the strangest looking can be friendly underneath, but mostly this is just a sparkling seaborne adventure with some very special pals at its heart.
Adrian Reynolds goes all out with the illustrations, Mark looking particularly fine as the ship pulls into New York.
