LoveReading4Kids Says

A delightfully deadpan picture book that perfectly captures the tricky landscape of toddler friendships and playtimes, as they have to learn about fairness, compromise and taking turns.

The toddlers in this case are three very cute and expressive animals. Weasel and Bear share a minimal, but charming, outdoor forest home. Weasel comes home one day and is put out to discover Bear playing with Badger. Badger is his friend! Bear tells him ‘Badger does not belong to you. You can play with him tomorrow’.

Badger tries to suggest they could all play together, but Weasel leaps in with his own suggestion of a game they could play, which swiftly turns into a tug of war between one who always wants to be in charge and one who never sticks to the rules, ultimately concluding ‘You are impossible to play with!’

Meanwhile Badger, who never gets to finish his reasonable suggestions, quietly puts his scarf on to go home, which shocks the quarrelsome pair. ‘Already? Just when we were having so much fun!’ They are even more shocked to hear that Badger, who has the last word, is playing with someone else tomorrow!

This is the sort of engaging storytelling which leaves plenty of space for children to get involved in discussing the characters and their behaviour and to conclude for themselves that cooperation and kindness are the best ways to make and keep friends. A realistic and relatable take on the inevitable conflicts of early childhood that is brilliantly evoked by the expressive illustrations and witty dialogue.
