LoveReading4Kids Says

The sky is personified as a little girl in this splendidly illustrated, joyful, empathetic picture book.

Sky is upset when she realises people grumble when the sky is grey and overcast, or when it’s cloudy and rainy. So she decides she’ll be bright and blue and brilliant, all the time. She hasn’t noticed Isla, a little girl who loves the sky whatever colour it is, painting it and finding purples, yellows, blues, pinks and more in stormy skies. As sunny, hot day follows sunny, hot day, and the landscape begins to dry up and turn brown, Isla sets off to tell Sky how much she loves her different moods and that it is OK not to feel sunny all the time.

That’s a message we all need to hear and it’s delivered beautifully. Greg Stobbs’ bright, painterly illustrations take us from rainy streets into peoples’ homes, from Isla’s glorious paintings up into the sky. Every page is a treat and the text is a delight to read aloud. Young readers will embrace their feelings, whether that’s happy and bright, stormy, gusty and strong, or rainy and blustery; they’ll likely dash off to do some painting too.

About Isla and the Sky

Sometimes Sky is vast, bright, and blue; sometimes she is dark and thunderous, her raindrops reflecting the town below. Isla loves all Sky's moods and tries to capture the variety in her paintings. When Sky rains or clouds over, however, all the other townspeople grumble and moan. Sky decides she should just try to be happy all the time, so people aren't cross with her.
