Last summer, Nan and her three friends embarked on one last boat trip for the summer. The idea was simple, take a swim in the sweltering summer heat and have some fun. Simple. The problem is, only Nan returned home from that trip. And what happed to Edie, Jane and Luce is a complete mystery. Nan’s story has always stayed the same, she doesn’t know what happened.
One year later, as the town is holding a somber vigil for the missing teens, Luce emerges from the river, breathing and fully alive. Nan is surprised, because she’s pretty convinced that she killed all three of those teens before returning home.
Kill Creatures is an a fantastic portrayal of female teenage friendship groups and how complex they can be. The mystery of this story isn’t who the murderer is, it’s how and why Nan committed the crimes. What could have happened to spark this murderous rampage within Nan’s heart? It’s clear Nan loves them, and as we turn each page we find out more and more why this event happened.
This isn’t a novel that provides a “I saw that coming” twist to it at the end. It’s disturbing and it’s real and it’s written by a top-notch YA author. With themes of being backstabbed, FOMO, being an outsider, this is written by someone who has lived through these experiences and has taken them all in and unleashed them upon us on the page.
Nan is a very relatable character despite the fact that she’s a murderer. And that is a testament to Power’s style and writing ability. Nan is a complex character that craves control and for good reason but is not a psychopath from birth. And when Luce emerges from that river like a spectre, Nan is forced to reckon with her actions and why she did what she did. What follows is a truly unhinged series of events that is simply impossible to put down. I loved this new YA from a great author!

About Rory Power
Rory Power grew up in New England, where she lives and works as a crime fiction editor and story consultant for TV adaptation. She received a Masters in Prose Fiction from the University of East Anglia and thinks fondly of her time there, partially because she learned a lot but mostly because there were a ton of bunnies on campus.
Her debut novel Wilder Girls was an instant New York Times bestseller. Burn Our Bodies Down is her second novel.
