Mr and Mrs Mouse and their three children, Max, Marty and baby Milly, live in the understairs cupboard of Miss Lavender's cottage. They are very happy there until Mr Tibbs, a big black-and-white cat, comes to live in the cottage. Mr Mouse decides he must find a safer home for his family, and they settle down in a shed in the vicarage garden.
