Kate and Dan are twins. When they are three, their mother Ana dies when she walks into the sea. Cormac, their dad, and Mrs Janey who looks after them when he is at sea, both do their best, but they still miss her. The story opens when they are twelve, and their lives are turned upside down when, carried by dolphins and surrounded with white protective light, they are lured beneath the sea by the strange Ms Cliona. Bewildered, they are forced to go through challenge after challenge on the wondrous and enchanting isles of the Underworld, where they meet powerful ancient beings known as Síoga. Most are kind, some are nasty, one is like a mother to them, and they begin to wonder if Ana has really died, or if she is a powerful Síoga who is 5,000 years old.
