Excerpt from One of the Red Shirts: A Story of Garibaldi's Men

To stand still or return meant certain capture; to advance Well, there was no help for it. Despair gave me courage for the mad attempt, and, yelling loudly, I rushed down the steps, emptying my revolver at random.

The effect was laughable. Panic-stricken for the moment, the soldiers dropped their lanterns and bumped against each other. Hit by a bullet, one toppled over, dragging another with him, and causing the utmost confusion.
