Selah's Bridge Synopsis

What happens when an adult with a score to settle tries to build a fence between your neighborhood and your favorite park? You try to build a bridge instead! At least, that's what twelve-year-old Selah Johnson does in Selah's Bridge, a Middle Grade chapter book which explores overcoming adversity, mending broken friendships, and creating positive change through community action. After Selah's best friend, Ami, falls off a slippery log that separates the two best friends' neighborhoods, Ami's father, Mr. Thrash, goes on a crusade to build a fence. Determined to protect his daughter from the "criminals" in Selah's neighborhood, he approaches the city council with plans to construct his fence. But Selah is not about to lose her best friend and her favorite park. She creates a counter-proposalone for building a bridge across the river that divides the two neighborhoods. Navigating the occasionally frustrating twists and turns of local government, Selah attends city council meetings, draws up a petition, and rallies her neighbors to try and defeat Mr. Thrash's proposal. Will Selah's community triumph against Mr. Thrash's wealth and influence? Will Selah mend the gulf that has formed between herself and Ami? It all hinges on the kindness and humanity of people.
