A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month February 2022
Full of the very best intentions and as a payback for the very many days and ways that their Mummy looks after them, two children set about giving their Mummy one very special day to remember for always. They think of all the things that Mummy loves – chocolates, homemade cakes, flowers and some special make up. But somehow, everything goes a little bit wrong! Looking after someone is harder than it looks. Never mind, Mummy gives hugs all round to make all the little problems seem better! It is a reassuring message lovingly conveyed in words and pictures.
Mummy makes every day special, so it's about time she had her own perfect day full of all her favourite things. Mummy makes us happy even when it's hard to do, wouldn't it be wonderful to make her happy too? This brother and sister know exactly what Mum loves: her favourite foods, flowers, and pictures painted by them. They arrange it all for Mummy's special day, but nothing seems to go to plan.
Luckily, the thing Mummy enjoys best is spending time with her little ones. A heartwarming story, perfect to snuggle up with on Mothers Day, a birthday, or any special day at all!
Frances Stickley grew up in Nottingham and Norwich, where she spent much of her time making up poems and dressing up her dog. She is a trained children's literacy specialist and a primary school teacher who is happiest when she is covered in paint or stuck in a book. Frances first realised her love for writing with the poem, 'My Dad's Milkfloat', when she was six.
In 2017, Frances was the winner of the Bloomsbury and National Literacy Trust short story prize. She lives with her family and a big-eared dog called Babbage. When she is not writing, you'll probably find her in a forest playing dragons with her daughters.
