I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened in Ohio. John Smith, out there, on the run. To the world, he's a mystery. But to me . . . he's one of us. Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us—if we all still believe in our mission. How can I know? There are six of us left. We're hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another . . . but our Legacies are developing, and soon we'll be equipped to fight. Is John Number Four, and is his appearance the sign I've been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from my dreams? The girl with powers that are beyond anything I could ever imagine? The girl who may be strong enough to bring the six of us together? They caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They tried to catch Number Four in Ohio—and failed. I am Number Seven. One of six still alive. And I'm ready to fight. Also included is a sneak listen to the first chapter of the next book in the series. Enjoy!

The Planetoid of Peril by Paul Ernst - Undaunted by crazy tales of an indestructible presence on Asteroid Z-40, Harley 2Q14N20 sets out alone to face and master it. Harley 2Q14N20 stopped for a moment outside the great dome of the Celestial Developments Company. Moodily he stared at their asteroid development chart. It showed, as was to be expected, the pick of the latest asteroid subdivision projects: the Celestial Developments Company, established far back in 2045, would handle none but the very best. Small chance of his finding anything here! However, as he gazed at the chart, hope came suddenly to his face, and his heart beat high under his sapphire blue tunic. There was an asteroid left for sale there—one blank space among the myriad, pink-lettered Sold symbols. Could it be that here was the chance he had been hunting so desperately? He bent closer, to read the description of the sphere, and the hope faded gradually from his countenance. According to its orbit and location, and the spectroscopic table of its mineral resources, it was a choice planetoid indeed. Of course such a rich little sphere, listed for sale by the luxurious Celestial Developments Company, would cost far more than he could ever rake together to pay for an asteroid. Shaking his head, he adjusted his gravity regulator to give him about a pound and a half of weight, and started to float on. Then, his lips twisting at his own absurd hopefulness, he stopped again; and after another moment of indecision turned into the archway that led to the concern's great main office. After all, it wouldn't hurt to inquire the price, even though he knew in advance it would be beyond his humble means.

The Planet of Illusion by Millard V. Gordon - 'A phantom land and a phantom folk Come sailing out of the deep unknown With a soundless roar and a lightless flash To conquer a void for them alone.' 'Planet sighted!' sang out Kendall, eye glued to the electro-telescope. 'Where away?' rang Fred Broster from his place at the controls. 'Five point on ten left from star. Point three seven above the elliptic,' came Kendall's voice again from the forward observation window. 'You're daft and dreaming. Snap into it and look again,' Broster yelled, staring hard at the automatically-recording space-chart. 'There's nothing here but a particularly empty species of nothingness.' The captain's keen gray eyes stared carefully at the glowing panel before him. On it shone out tiny points of light which revealed each of the different bodies through whose vicinity the Astralite was passing. A remarkable device actuated by delicate gravital detectors which marked out every body they approached. And according to this chart, there was no such planet recorded in the depths of the device as that which Kendall had sighted. 'I'm not dreaming. Your chart is wrong if you can't find it there,' Kendall remarked after a pause, still staring through the lens of the instrument. Broster examined the chart again. No; there positively was no planet circling the star as his observer claimed. 'Come away from there!' he called, straightening up. 'Dr. Seaward, will you please take the observer's place and check.' Seaward dropped the calculations in hand, walked across the control room of the great interstellar explorer, up to the very tip. Kendall stood aside while the doctor applied his eye to the lens. 'It's there all right, Broster. A little red disk exactly where he called it off; the chart's wrong.'

The Plagiarist From Rigel IV by Evan Hunter - Writing stories was hard work—unless Fred had a typewriter like 'Reggie' that could write by itself! Nonsense? Fred agreed until he met— THE PLAGIARIST FROM RIGEL IV I bought the typewriter in a pawn shop on Third Avenue. The pawn shop proprietor was a balding old man with a walrus mustache. 'How much?' I asked him. 'Five dollars,' he said casually. I glanced at him skeptically. The machine was a Remington Noiseless, with italics, probably worth a little over a hundred new, and it couldn't have been more than a year or two old. 'How much?' I asked. 'Five dollars, is what I said. Five.' He held up the fingers of his widespread hand. 'Five. One-two-three....' 'What's wrong with it?' I asked suspiciously. The old man shrugged. 'Something has to be wrong with it? Listen, young man, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.' 'How come it's so cheap?' The old man sighed deeply. 'You try to do a favor, you get all kinds of questions. Would you feel happier if I charged you fifty-five dollars?' 'I wouldn't pay fifty-five dollars. I haven't got that much money.' 'Have you got five dollars? Can you pay that much?' 'Yes. But....' 'All right, take the machine. A case goes with it. Believe me, young man, this is a bargain.' 'Five dollars?' I asked again. 'Five dollars. You want it? Yes or no? I got other things to do.' 'I'll take it.' The old man smiled. 'Good, you'll never regret it.' He slid the machine off the counter and put it into its case. He snapped the case shut then, locked it, and handed me the two keys.
