Jade asks her parents if she can get a dog. They say no. She asks if she can get a dog if she pays for it, and they say yes. So Jade washes dogs for one dollar each and makes enough to buy a dog tag, but not a dog!
Jade is having problems with her classmate Rosie. Rosie snatches her new key chain, sits too close, and grabs the ball from her. After Jade confronts Rosie, the girls solve their problem and become friends.
When Michael's parents return from Haiti, they bring him an unusual gift--e that he cannot see. They tell the puzzled Michael about the wonderful storytellers they heard in Haiti. Then Michael's father captivates him with a Haitian story about a monkey.
Every Sunday, Mom posts a list of chores. Sam says he gets the worst jobs and Riley has the easy ones. When Sam asks if he can trade jobs with Riley, Mom says she doesn't mind as long as his sister agrees. After the siblings switch jobs, neither is happy. By Friday, they agree to go back to their old jobs.
Mr. Ramirez's class is going on a field trip to the Olson Farm. There, the classmates find their way through a maze, slide down into a pile of hay, and pick pumpkins. Back in class, three students share one giant pumpkin by drawing three faces on it.
Jade moves to a new city and starts a dog-walking business with a friend. A stray dog follows Jade while she's walking the dogs. When the stray dog disappears, Jade and her dad rescue him from the animal shelter. Jade names the dog Max and brings him home.
