Big Lake Village decides to post a sign prohibiting the green boats of the Little Lake villagers from the fishing grounds. In defiance, a young girl paints her father's green boat blue and goes fishing. There, she meets a young boy who is ultimately able to convince his father, a village leader, to remove the sign and improve relations between the two villages.
Pedro and Marta get to meet Cesar Chavez, a man who is fighting to make farm workers' lives better. They spend the day marching with their father and alongside others in support of equal treatment for all.
Janise's new school has one thing in common with all the other schools she has attended: it has a bully. Janise encourages the kids in her class to stand up to Derrick. But when he picks on her, she doesn't follow her own advice. To her surprise, the other kids come to her defense. They have come to realize Derrick feels left out and doesn't know how to make friends.
Luisa resents that she has to spend so much time doing chores to help her mother. She feels as if her mother doesn't understand that she would rather be playing with her friends than working around the house. Then her mother finds a note she wrote as a little girl to Luisa's grandmother. The note gives both Luisa and her mother insight into each other's feelings and leads them to make an agreement regarding the chores that is satisfying to both of them.
