In the early years of our country, a poor school teacher, Justin Morgan, receives a horse and her tiny colt in payment for some work. He wishes he had been given money instead. Hoping that he might sell both horses for a fair price, he asks his student, Joel, to break in the colt. To his surprise, young Joel soon discovers that this small, brown creature has special abilities: "Bub" can pull more than a team of oxen, and he can run faster than a racehorse. But while the sturdy little runt wins contest after contest, all Joel wants is to save enough money to buy the beloved "Bub." Justin Morgan Had a Horse is the story of the love between a young boy and a very special horse. A classic of children's literature, it also traces the history of one of the most famous breeds of American horses-the Morgan. Marguerite Henry has earned enduring popularity for her children's books, which include Misty of Chincoteague, also a Newbery Honor book.

Drawing from the oral storytelling traditions of India and Africa, Nobel Prize winner Rudyard Kipling's vigorous, amusing tales offer imaginative answers to unanswered questions about animals and provide little pearls of wisdom. Kipling began inventing these stories in his American wife's hometown of Brattleboro, Vermont, to amuse his eldest daughter. Over 100 years later, these classic tales, filled with playfully clever animals and people, are still entertaining children and adults alike. "How the Camel Got His Hump," "How the Leopard Got His Spots," and "How the Alphabet Was Made" are just three of the twelve enlightening short stories. ** Please contact member services for additional documents.

Just So Stories for Little Children
The 'Just So Stories for Little Children' is among Kipling's best known and loved work. The stories focus on different animals, and how they got their distinctive features. You will for example discover why the elephant's trunk is so very long, and how the leopard got its spots. Written originally for his own daughter, the author's pleasure in playing with the sounds and meanings of words is very evident, and adds to the adults' enjoyment of these children stories. This playfulness is also dramatically present in the plotting. For both reasons, these stories have been loved by generations of children and adults alike, and they are best enjoyed when read aloud.

I am the cat who walks by himself and all places are alike to me' Here are the delightful stories which Kipling first told his own children before setting them down on paper. How the Camel got his Hump, How the Leopard got his spots, How the Elephant got his Trunk, The Butterfly that Stamped, and many others. They remain popular, entertaining every generation, partly because of the story and partly because of the vivid way they are written. To hear them - unabridged as they are here - is to enjoy them in their original form.

Kipling's own drawings, with their long, funny captions, illustrate his hilarious explanations of How the Camel Got His Hump, How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin, How the Armadillo Happened, and other animal How's. He began inventing these stories in his American wife's hometown of Brattleboro, Vermont, to amuse his eldest daughter--and they have served ever since as a source of laughter for children everywhere.

Kipling's Just So Stories are among the most enduring classic children's tales. They follow the traditional genre of stories that explain how unusual natural phenomenon came about, often using fantastic and highly magical explanations. Kipling himself was born and spent his very early life in India, and some of the inspiration for these stories comes from traditional tales he heard from his ayah and the family's other servants. So Kipling's armadillo arises from the magical fusion of a hedgehog and a tortoise who practice swimming and curling up, respectively, until their shapes modify. The elephant's trunk is the result of a tussle with a hungry crocodile, and the kangaroo's shape and ability to jump came about when he was chased by a dingo for an entire day. The rhinoceros gets his loose skin and bad temper from the itching brought about by having cake crumbs under his hide. And the cat who walked by himself explains the independence of cats, which contrasts with the servility of other domesticated animals.

COMMENTARY Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of Just So Stories Kipling's JUST SO STORIES are a travelogue of famous places--the Amazon, the Limpopo, the Gobi Desert, and many other well-known global landmarks. The diversity of the animals in the stories dictates that they inhabit numerous continents. In David Thorn narration listeners can appreciate Kipling's sense of humor, as well as the lesson embedded in each story. He reads all the stories with a quiet, understated cadence that lulls listeners into a different time and place. As Thorn narrates with a twinkle in his eye, each listener can easily imagine him- or herself as ""Dear Beloved,"" the recipient of these wonderful imaginings. This is a classic to be listened to again and again. J.K.R. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT/ NOV 07] The twelve stories that make up Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories are delightful children's reading or in this case listening. Kipling takes us on a journey to the Howling Desert to learn how the camel got his hump, a Neolithic Cave to learn how the alphabet was made, and the Amazon to learn about the beginning of the armadillos amongst other exotic locales for equally legendary tales. Narrator David Thorn is up to the task of enticing the listener along for the ride and bringing the words on paper to magical life in the mind's eye of the listener. His voicing adds that touch of the exotic while not running away into overblown Disney characterization. This is terrific family-read-aloud, since it is unabridged and can save mom or dad's voice. It ought also to keep young ones entertained during long drives.
