"The brave tin soldier" also called "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a tin soldier's love for a paper ballerina. On his birthday, a boy receives a set of 25 toy soldiers all cast from one old tin spoon and arrays them on a table top. One soldier stands on a single leg, as having been the last one cast there was not enough metal to make him whole. Nearby, the soldier spies a paper ballerina with a spangle on her sash. She too is standing on one leg and the soldier falls in love. That night, a goblin among the toys in the form of a Jack-in-the-box angrily warns the soldier to take his eyes off the ballerina, but the soldier ignores him. The next day, the soldier falls from a windowsill (presumably the work of the goblin) and lands in the street. Two boys find the soldier, place him in a paper boat, and set him sailing in the gutter... ***Please contact Member Services for additional documents***

After witnessing his father's crucifixion by Roman soldiers, Daniel bar Jamin yearns for vengeance. Consumed by hatred, he lives dangerously among outlaws in the hills outside of his village, spying and impatiently plotting. In nearby Capernaum, a rabbi is teaching a different lesson. Time and again, Daniel is drawn to the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, only to turn away, disappointed and confused by Jesus's lack of action in opposing the Romans. Headstrong and devoid of tenderness, Daniel is also heedless of the love and loyalty of those around him, dragging them along his own destructive path. Winner of the 1962 Newbery Medal, The Bronze Bow is the story of a boy's tormented journey from a blinding hatred to the acceptance and understanding of love.

The Call of the Wild is a short adventure novel by Jack London. The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively feral in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs. By the end, he sheds the veneer of civilization, and relies on primordial instinct and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild. The Call of the Wild was enormously popular from the moment it was published. H. L. Menken wrote of London's story: 'No other popular writer of his time did any better writing than you will find in The Call of the Wild.' A reviewer for The New York Times wrote of it in 1903: 'If nothing else makes Mr. London's book popular, it ought to be rendered so by the complete way in which it will satisfy the love of dog fights apparently inherent in every man.' The reviewer for The Atlantic Monthly wrote that it was a book: 'untouched by bookishness...The making and the achievement of such a hero [Buck] constitute, not a pretty story at all, but a very powerful one.'
