Andersen är mest känd för sina sagor (på danska: eventyr) och skrev över 200 sagor, 1 000 dikter, 6 romaner och 50 skådespel och hans verk finns översatta till nära 150 språk.

En mästertjuv har blivit en rik man genom att utöva sitt hantverk över hela världen. Till slut dras han dock tillbaka till sitt hemland och berättar för sin gudfar, greven på slottet nära sin fars hus, om sina förmågor. Greven blir först arg och vill hänga mästertjuven omedelbart, men sedan ger han gudsonen chansen att bevisa sina färdigheter med tre uppgifter.
Först måste mästertjuven stjäla den bästa hästen från grevens stall, som bevakas av soldater. Den andra uppgiften; mästertjuven ska under natten stjäla lakanet under grevens kropp och vigselringen från grevinnans finger. Slutligen blir den tredje uppgiften för mästertjuven att stjäla pastorn och kyrkoherden från kyrkan.
'Mästertjuven' är saga från 1843 och har nummer 192 i deras sagosamling.
