Kongos sagovärld är mycket rik. Från släkte till släkte har man berättat sägner, myter, fabler och sagor. Ibland har en saga eller en fabel förkortats till ett ordspråk med en rik bakgrund, som skiftar med berättarens sätt att framställa den.Från en kärna, som kan sammanfattas i några få ord, skildrar den afrikanske berättaren för sina lyssnare mänskliga svagheter och dygder, religiösa föreställningar och den omgivande naturen.
Åhörarna samlas i ring omkring berättaren. Och när han skildrar döda ting t.ex. en grytskärva eller afrikanska djur som symboler för människor, då är alla med. Han behöver inte förklara vad en kalebass är – det torkade skalet av en kurbits eller gurkväxt. De stora träden känner åhörarna vid namn liksom de vanligaste djuren, som förekommer i fablerna. Man kan inte direkt översätta en afrikansk berättares skildring. Den skulle behöva kommenteras alltför mycket. Jag har i stället försökt använda de afrikanska berättarnas metod. Med utgång från ett kort motiv har jag försökt skildra Kongos miljö för svenska barn, och jag hoppas även för äldre läsare.
Materialet till dessa sagor har jag till stor del fått av två sagesmän från nuvarande Kongorepubliken (Brazzaville). ”Den förste Monsieur N´Zaba Philippe är från stammen babembe. Han har under många år verkat som distriktsföreståndare inom Dolisie missionsområde. Den andre är Monsieur Pomo från skogsfolket bambamba, en stam tillhörande bakutafolket. Några sagor har jag hämtat ur kongolitteraturen.
