Jellinek acuñó la expresión «el concepto de enfermedad del alcoholismo», y aceleró significativamente el movimiento hacia la medicalización de la embriaguez y la habituación al alcohol. El estudio inicial de Jellinek en 1946 fue financiado por Marty Mann y R. Brinkley Smithers.
