Formo parte de la OMS, (Organización Mundial de la Salud), he aquí las fases del alcoholismo y la drogadicción que el propuso: (Tabla de la alcoholomanía) En 1849, el médico sueco Magnus Huss (1807-1890) fue el primero en clasificar sistemáticamente el daño atribuible a la ingestión de alcohol. Huss acuñó el término alcoholismo y lo utilizó para etiquetar lo que él consideraba una enfermedad crónica y recidivante. Jellinek acuñó la expresión «el concepto de enfermedad del alcoholismo», y aceleró significativamente el movimiento hacia la medicalización de la embriaguez y la habituación al alcohol. El estudio inicial de Jellinek en 1946 fue financiado por Marty Mann y R. Brinkley Smithers. Se basó en un estudio estrecho y selectivo de un grupo cuidadosamente seleccionado de miembros de Alcohólicos Anónimos (AA) que habían devuelto un cuestionario de autoevaluación.
