The Misplaced Battleship by Harry Harrison - It might seem a little careless to lose track of something as big as a battleship ... but interstellar space is on a different scale of magnitude. But a misplaced battleship—in the wrong hands!—can be most dangerous. When it comes to picking locks and cracking safes I admit to no master. The door to Inskipp's private quarters had an old-fashioned tumbler drum that was easier to pick than my teeth. I must have gone through that door without breaking step. Quiet as I was though, Inskipp still heard me. The light came on and there he was sitting up in bed pointing a .75 caliber recoilless at my sternum. 'You should have more brains than that, diGriz,' he snarled. 'Creeping into my room at night! You could have been shot.' 'No I couldn't,' I told him, as he stowed the cannon back under his pillow. 'A man with a curiosity bump as big as yours will always talk first and shoot later. And besides—none of this pussyfooting around in the dark would be necessary if your screen was open and I could have got a call through.' Inskipp yawned and poured himself a glass of water from the dispenser unit above the bed. 'Just because I head the Special Corps, doesn't mean that I am the Special Corps,' he said moistly while he drained the glass. 'I have to sleep sometime. My screen is open only for emergency calls, not for every agent who needs his hand held.' 'Meaning I am in the hand-holding category?' I asked with as much sweetness as I could. 'Put yourself in any category you please,' he grumbled as he slumped down in the bed. 'And also put yourself out into the hall and see me tomorrow during working hours.' He was at my mercy, really. He wanted sleep so much. And he was going to be wide awake so very soon. 'Do you know what this is?' I asked him, poking a large glossy pic under his long broken nose. One eye opened slowly.

The Incredible Invasion by George O. Smith - It's very difficult to find a good, sound. legal way of stopping an aggressor—when the victims always anxiously invite him to come in and take over! Jim Franklen paused a moment before he opened the door of the office. He stopped to read the black lettering with a surface of pride—he was a part of it. The sign read: UNITED NATIONS WEAPON SECURITY COUNCIL Thomas Winter, President Then Franklen opened the door and went in, confidently. He greeted the man behind the desk, who looked up worriedly from a maze of paper work and bade Franklen to sit down. Winter said: 'Trouble, Franklen. Bad trouble.' Franklen nodded. 'I know,' he said. 'I've been following it. I gather that the fools are getting worse?' Winter agreed with a slight nod of the head and replied: 'I can't imagine what they're up to. Yet they continue to rattle the saber and make demands. The Central Power is not ignorant of the ramifications of their acts. Not after we've made point-blank statements. But they continue to get rougher and bolder, just as though they had the world in the palm of their hands.' 'They know that they can't win, don't they?' asked Franklen. 'They should—they've been told, and they have been shown exactly what will happen, how, and why. The proof is irrevocable, undeniable. Still they continue.' 'I understand we've been watching them closely.'

Day of the Hunters by Isaac Asimov - The little old man had a new slant on the mystery of what happened to the great dinosaurs... It began the same night it ended. It wasn't much. It just bothered me; it still bothers me. You see, Joe Bloch, Ray Manning and I were squatting around our favorite table in the corner bar with an evening on our hands and a mess of chatter to throw it away with. That's just the beginning. Joe Bloch started it by talking about the atomic bomb, and what he thought ought to be done with it, and how who would have though it five years ago. And I said lots of guys thought about it five years ago and wrote stories about it and it was going to be tough on them trying to keep ahead of the newspapers now. Which led to a general palaver on how lots of screwy things might come true and a lot of for-instances were thrown about.

Adjustment Team by Philip K. Dick - Something went wrong... and Ed Fletcher got mixed up in the biggest thing in his life It was bright morning. The sun shone down on the damp lawns and sidewalks, reflecting off the sparkling parked cars. The clerk came walking hurriedly, leafing through his instructions, flipping pages and frowning. He stopped in front of the small green stucco house for a moment, and then turned up the walk, entering the back yard. The dog was asleep inside his shed, his back turned to the world. Only his thick tail showed. 'For Heaven's sake,' the clerk exclaimed, hands on his hips. He tapped his mechanical pencil noisily against his clipboard. 'Wake up, you in there.' The dog stirred. He came slowly out of his shed, head first, blinking and yawning in the morning sunlight. 'Oh, it's you. Already?' He yawned again. 'Big doings.' The clerk ran his expert finger down the traffic-control sheet. 'They're adjusting Sector T137 this morning. Starting at exactly nine o'clock.' He glanced at his pocket watch. 'Three hour alteration. Will finish by noon.' 'T137? That's not far from here.' The clerk's thin lips twisted with contempt. 'Indeed. You're showing astonishing perspicacity, my black-haired friend. Maybe you can divine why I'm here.' 'We overlap with T137.' Exactly. Elements from this Sector are involved. We must make sure they're properly placed when the adjustment begins.'

Monsters That Once Were Men by Robert Silverberg - They were like creatures painted by a drunken artist, ghastly, utterly repulsive caricatures of humanity! Tet, twisted through they were, they were still human... We were en route from Arenack to Delimon XI when some trouble developed in the gyroscopic drive stabilizers, and so we decided to lay over for repairs at the nearest planet. We weren't in any real hurry to get to Delimon XI, because we were flush from our last hauling job, and didn't need cash in a hurry. That's our trade, you see—interstellar hauling. I've been a free-lance transport man for the last twenty-eight years, and I like the work just fine. I carry a crew of eight, charge top rates and get them too, and the work is pleasant if you have the right kind of disposition for it, which I happen to have. But the events of that simple little stopover for stabilizer repairs nearly soured my disposition for good.

Escape by Paul Ernst - A brief weird tale about the escape of a madman! He had the craziest form of craziness I'd ever seen. Of course, I hasten to add, I hadn't seen much. I'd been through an asylum once before, as now, to get a story for my paper on treatment and condition of State inmates, and that was all. On that former trip I'd witnessed nothing like this; nor had I, till now, on this trip. The man didn't look crazy. So often they don't

...And It Comes Out Here by Lester Del Ray - There is one fact no sane man can quarrel with ... everything has a beginning and an end. But some men aren't sane; thus it isn't always so! No, you're wrong. I'm not your father's ghost, even if I do look a bit like him. But it's a longish story, and you might as well let me in. You will, you know, so why quibble about it? At least, you always have ... or do ... or will. I don't know, verbs get all mixed up. We don't have the right attitude toward tenses for a situation like this. Anyhow, you'll let me in. I did, so you will. Thanks. You think you're crazy, of course, but you'll find out you aren't. It's just that things are a bit confused. And don't look at the machine out there too long—until you get used to it, you'll find it's hard on the eyes, trying to follow where the vanes go. You'll get used to it, of course, but it will take about thirty years. You're wondering whether to give me a drink, as I remember it. Why not? And naturally, since we have the same tastes, you can make the same for me as you're having. Of course we have the same tastes—we're the same person. I'm you thirty years from now, or you're me. I remember just how you feel; I felt the same way when he—that is, of course, I or we—came back to tell me about it, thirty years ago. Here, have one of these. You'll get to like them in a couple more years. And you can look at the revenue stamp date, if you still doubt my story. You'll believe it eventually, though, so it doesn't matter. Right now, you're shocked. It's a real wrench when a man meets himself for the first time. Some kind of telepathy seems to work between two of the same people. You sense things. So I'll simply go ahead talking for half an hour or so, until you get over it. After that you'll come along with me.
