Unlocking the Cage: Exploring the Motivations of MMA Fighters

Unlocking the Cage: Exploring the Motivations of MMA Fighters

Author: Mark Tullius Narrator: Tee Quillin Release Date: 01/03/2020

The cage door clangs shut. The lock slides into place. The voice in my head drowns out everything else. What the hell is wrong with me?Follow the journey of Mark Tullius, former cage fighter and boxer turned author and stay-at-home dad as he puts his love of fighting and his sociology degree to use. What began as a personal exploration to unlock his reasons for continuing to train and pursue a fight career evolved into an in-depth sociological study of why competing in mixed martial arts (MMA) appeals to fighters. Why do these men and women subject themselves to the endless hours of grueling training required for the full-contact sport? In MMA a fighter's goal is to punch, kick, and choke an opponent into submission, and if there is blood and injury along the way, so be it. What compels these individuals to develop the necessary strength, endurance, discipline, and skill despite the risks involved?Instead of interviewing a handful of elite fighters, Mark traveled to every corner of the country, looking to train at different gyms and find fighters interested in showing the world who they are and why they fight. He finished the project after visiting 100 gyms and interviewing 340 fighters.Although it wasn't necessary, Tullius trained with the fighters and soon came to realize how valuable that time was, cultivating mental strength by surrounding himself with positive and inspiring individuals. It encouraged him to continue his project when he still had doubts about seeing it to its completion. Finally, Tullius believed that his willingness to get on the mat and demonstrate his trust in the fighters encouraged them to trust him and open up to a stranger about their fears and mistakes, dreams and accomplishments.

Somber Stroll: Five Horror Stories

Author: Mark Tullius Narrator: Dawna Gonzales, Tee Quillin Release Date: 01/12/2018

Short-but-sweet collection by Mark Tullius, one of the hardest-hitting horror authors around. Included are five somber strolls through what could be any suburban town. Find yourself:an overworked father trying to protect his son an injured construction worker questioning reality a sensitive teenage girl watching a mixed martial arts battle to the deathan aging DJ granting a sick girl's glorious last wishThe fifth and final tale is a shocking jaunt through the author's mind, full of juicy revelations and admissions. These bizarre and bloody tales will leave you begging for more.I went into these pages not having any familiarity with Mr. Tullius. The stories are quick and very involved with the first person narrative of the author acting the part in each offering. I am going to be exploring Mark Tullius further and am looking forward to reading his work in true novel form...the short stories being so intriguing that I have to imagine his "full length " work will be quite the adventure. - Dahne1004Let the nightmares begin; get your copy today.

Author: Mark Tullius Narrator: Tee Quillin Release Date: 01/12/2018

Brightside: A Psychological ThrillerImagine a world where the person next to you-stranger, friend, lover-has the ability to creep into your mind and steal your most intimate thoughts. Now imagine you are the Thought Thief who is so greatly feared that your freedom and your life are threatened. Welcome to Brightside...you won't be leaving.Brightside, by Mark Tullius, takes a unique twist on the psychic phenomena of telepathy. The fearful masses panic and create Brightside, a town that is essentially a prison. Protagonist Joe Nolan is one of the many Thought Thieves who have been rounded up and forced to live in Brightside, with little hope of ever leaving. Suspense builds as Joe finds himself on a mission to break free on his 100th day of captivity."THAT'S WHY THEY'VE ROUNDED US UP, STUCK US IN THIS LITTLE TOWN. IT'S TO MAKE YOU FEEL SAFE. BUT THEY CAN'T KEEP US HERE FOREVER. IT'S DAY 100 AND IT'S ALL GONNA END. ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, I'M GETTING OUT OF BRIGHTSIDE."The reviews tell why Brightside should be your next read:"A well-written and well-executed story by first-time author Mark Tullius. It reads like a gritty, postmodernism novel similar to Blade Runner or A Scanner Darkly. Very interesting character development and plot elements, especially since the protagonist can't hide anything. A quick and fast read that keeps you glued to the pages." - eNovel Reviews"Brightside is a fiction novel about a believable "now" where a large population of the world are telepathic, or "Thought Thieves" as they call them in the book. The fearful and ignorant masses cause panic and mass arrests and institutionalization of these individuals, who are sent to a "island in the sky" called Brightside, which is basically a prison on top of a mountain. The book follows Joe and his journey through 100 days at Brightside, and the people he interacts with along the way."Add Brightside to your bookshelf today!
