Dem Angeklagten stand nach dem Gesetz das Recht zu, eine andere Strafe zu fordern, gleichzeitig aber seine Schuld anzuerkennen. Sokrates, von seiner Unschuld überzeugt, widerstrebte es jedoch überhaupt eine Strafe für sich zu fordern, was er in seiner Verteidigungsrede zum Ausdruck brachte. Die Abstimmung erbrachte daraufhin eine noch größere Mehrheit als vorher für den Antrag der Ankläger: Tod durch den Giftbecher.

El albanés es una lengua macrolengua indoeuropea hablada por unos 5 a 6 millones de personas, la mayor parte de ellas en Albania, Macedonia del Norte y en el parcialmente reconocido país de Kosovo, ya que en ambos países el albanés es su lengua mayoritaria. Existen también comunidades albanesas que lo hablan en Montenegro, Grecia e Italia. El dialecto hablado en este último país se conoce como 'arbëreshë'. El primer libro escrito conservado en albanés que se conoce es Meshari ('Misario'), escrito por el clérigo católico Gjon Buzuku en 1555. En la década de 1850 se demostró que el albanés es un idioma adriático, y constituye actualmente una rama propia dentro de la familia de las lenguas indoeuropeas. Inicialmente se sugirió que era la única lengua superviviente de las lenguas ilirias que antiguamente se hablaron en el suroeste de los Balcanes. Sin embargo, actualmente existe una prueba más sólida de su parentesco con el antiguo dacio que se habló en Mesia y Dacia. La principal evidencia son préstamos prerromanos en el rumano moderno, presumible mente procedentes del dacio, que claramente están emparentados con el moderno albanés.
