Find out moreRoald Dahl was born in Wales of Norwegian parents – the child of a second marriage. His father and elder sister died when Roald was just three. His mother was left to raise two stepchildren and her own four children. Roald was her only son.
He had an unhappy time at school - at Llandaff Cathedral School, at St Peter’s prep school in Weston-super-Mare and then at Repton in Derbyshire.
Dahl’s unhappy time at school was to influence his writing greatly. He once said that what distinguished him from most other children’s writers was “this business of remembering what it was like to be young”. Roald’s childhood and schooldays are the subject of his autobiography Boy.
Since Roald Dahl’s death, his books have more than maintained their popularity. Total sales of the UK editions are around 37 million, with more than 1 million copies sold every year! Sales have grown particularly strongly in America where Dahl books are now achieving the bestselling status that curiously proved elusive during the author’s lifetime.

A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month March 2017 A great collection of simple semi-scientific experiments perfect for curious children to do at home. In Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine, the hero famously makes some evil potions to see off his horrible grandma. Now anyone can have a go. In this book there is a Foaming Fizzy Potion which will satisfyingly froth right up and out of the cup – just don’t try drinking it! And an equally disgusting Boogie Gloop which can be made to dance if set on a speaker with the music turned up to full volume. There’s also stuff to do with magnets, potatoes, worms and candy crystals and loads more. A sprinkling of Quentin Blake illustrations adds to the delight of this book. ~ Julia Eccleshare ***There is special activity pack with ideas to celebrate Science Week to download here! There’s trickery afoot in this touching and brief story. Mr Hoppy loves his garden and he (secretly) loves Mrs Silver. Mrs Silver is oblivious of what Mr Hoppy feels and she gives all of her love to her tortoise! Mr Hoppy realises that the way to Mrs Silver’s heart is to help to make the tortoise grow. But how can he do that? Mr Hoppy comes up with a clever plan. Everyone is happy. Roald Dahl is a master of invention and his love of clever tricks – and here they are unusually nice ones - permeate this delicious story. ~ Julia Eccleshare

This is a delightful, funny and exciting story about a special friendship between two people from different worlds – a giant and a child. As the story develops it shows how trust and love develops between them. It also shows that bullying must not be tolerated and Dahl is at his might best here by eventually ensuring the big bad giants get their comeuppance whilst the big friendly giant wins the day alongside the little girl Sophie. The text is perfectly complemented with illustrations by Quentin Blake. Unbelievably moving. Click here to see our Favourite Top 10 Dahl Books Perfect for Reluctant Readers as well as keen readers. October 2011 Guest Editor Roddy Doyle. All of Dahl’s books are great, but this one stands out for two reasons: 1. the poaching plans, and the poaching itself, are brilliantly precise and an invitation to the reader to choose poaching as a career, or at least a hobby; and, 2. the love between the father and son is wonderfully written, and probably the best I’ve read.
Best loved author Roald Dahl provides a treasure trove of quirky and delicious stories and scenes of make-believe taken from his bestselling books. Dahl himself loved secrets and so the uncovering of snippets of facts about him such as his high risk strategy of riding out on his motor bike on Sundays from his boarding school seems especially good fun. It’s a wonderful introduction to the writing of a great author and is just one of a number of Pocket Money Puffins. To view others click here.
A feast of fabulous recipes drawn from Roald Dahl’s best selling stories. Fans of Matilda will love the deliciously chocolatey recipe for Billy Bogtrotter’s Cake. And George’s Marvellous Medicine Chicken Soup will slip down a treat while Boggis’s Chicken which includes dumplings and parsley sauce will provide a whole scrumptious meal. All the recipe’s are easy to follow and reflect Roald Dahl’s own passion for scrumptious food!

In this special edition there's a page of disgustingly smelly scratch-and-sniff stickers to decorate Mr Twit's beard included too! Yuck!. Mr and Mrs Twit are possibly the vilest of all Roald Dahl’s creations. They are ugly on the inside, as is evident from the cruel tricks they play on each other and the way they treat the Muggle-Wump monkeys, and utterly disgusting on the outside! The very thought of Mrs Twit’s cooking is enough to make grown-ups turn green, and as for Mr Twit’s beard … It’s hard to think of a book that is better suited to the addition of scratch and sniff stickers than this viscerally effective tale! It should probably come with a warning for adults but children will relish using the very stinky stickers to make Mr Twit’s beard even more disgusting! ~ Andrea Reece

Ideal as an early introduction to Roald Dahl just as a child is starting to read alone because it’s a short story by comparison to some of his others. Filled with quirky black and white illustrations by the wonderful Quentin Blake that complement the story so beautifully. As three of the nastiest and most crooked farmers vow to wreak revenge on the foxes eating their chickens, little do they know what the foxes have in store for them.

Forget what you thought about Roald Dahl from the BFG, The Twits and Matilda. Here is a collection of some his most intriguing, dark, macabre, yet always entertaining short stories aimed for the older teen. Dahl manages to inject black humour and irony into these tales, most of which contain savage twists, covering topics such as revenge, envy, greed, misfortune and other less pleasant elements of humanity. Guaranteed to keep you reading long into the night.
