Find out moreHilda Offen was born in Surrey and lived for the first part of her life on an entirely self-sufficient small-holding. She attended Reigate School of Art for three years and, when she had saved enough money by working for a printing firm, she became a freelance illustrator and worked for magazines and newspapers. She then did an English degree at University College, London which she enjoyed very much. She illustrated many collections of Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Stories and wrote her first book RITA THE RESCUER. She followed this with two others, OLD WILLIAM AND THE SEVENTH SHEEP and MRS. LAMPKINS LODGER. She then started writing and illustrating her own books and has so far written nine. She works at home, but does some teaching in colleges which she values as it gives her a chance to keep in touch with the children she is writing for. She believes that "any book for children should be capable of firing the imagination." Hilda Offen lives in Sussex.
Shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Book Prize 2009 Another brilliantly funny story from an incredibly funny author. Josh is not impressed when he has to write a poem for homework so he decides to ‘borrow’ one from a book. His teacher is impressed, so impressed in fact that he is sent on a poetry course, which means missing his favourite activity – football. And Josh is even less amused when he discovers the person running the course is the man who wrote the poem he stole. Josh is in more trouble than you can imagine. A book that is full of enchantment and pandemonium. The Wizard King is losing his hair and as no King is allowed lose his hair, his son and heir just back from school will have to take over. Poor Florian has little choice but to face up to the monuments challenges ahead which include taming a dragon, flying with feathers, going beneath the earth and fighting a water monster. Fortunately for Florian his friend Laura Jones is organised, sensible and is here to help! Full of witchcraft, wizardry and at times very funny, this book is ideal for young readers.
Hilda Offen is so good at creating characters, both animal and human that children can really empathise with and in this one, the Howlett owls and the Honeybell family are no exception. Sure to build reader confidence and ability with maximum enjoyment thrown in.
Hilda Offen's brilliantly funny story about a spoilt prince, five witches, a fairy godmother and a clever girl, will have newly fluent readers from 5 upwards enjoying every moment of it. Guaranteed to build reader confidence and a love of books.
Rita may be small and often left behind but she’s not the kind of girl to sit about long. Especially when there is someone to be rescued. In fact, Rita is something of a superhero and here she’s off catching ponies, rescuing climbers and even taming the Hound of Red Rock Moor. A perfect beginning reader about a delightful heroine. (5+)
An absolutely delightful tale of adventure for an ordinary girl called Rita who becomes ‘supergirl’. The text is full of humour and complements the illustrations brilliantly. Imaginations will run riot as Rita manages to save numerous people from almost certain disaster in a wonderful underwater world.
