Jayakaran started writing stories and poems for young adults about 20 years ago. He enjoyed writing young adult stories, but could not muster enough courage to do his favorite - the picture book. But this changed after his first few story-telling events at bookstores in Kuala Lumpur. Penguin Books engaged him for story-telling events during September (Roald Dahl month) after their regular storyteller fell ill. The development of Fru, however, started taking shape after he started telling made-up stories on frogs to his oldest god-grandson, Rayyan Rizqin Hafiz.
