Scoop, is a brilliant children's magazine, each issue is full to the brim with incredible writers and illustrators. With original fiction, articles, poetry, puzzles, comics, games and activities connected to the topic of that issue. We contributed to this month's issue of Scoop with our favourite books about Art and we'll be contributing book recommendations linked to the issue's theme each month. ou can find these recommendations and more Art books here. Without further ado, here is Clementine Macmillan-Scott to tell you more!

"About 4 years ago I was in the old newspaper library at Collindale when I came across a newspaper called The Children's Newspaper- it was in the format of an adult newspaper but all the articles and features were stories chosen and written to interest children. The thing that struck me was the way it treated its' readers with respect and absolutely refrained from patronising them. It also had at its core the idea that the best way into any subject is through a narrative. I decided to look into it and found that the newspaper ran for 80 years but was no longer around. What we seemed to have instead, lining the shelves of newsagents and supermarkets, was plastic wrapped, heavily branded and gendered magazines and none of them seemed to have their readers intelligence at their core. I decided it would be good if there was an alternative and so Scoop was created.

Early on Scoop went from being a weekly newspaper to a magazine as we realised that we could invite the most amazing writers of both fiction and non-fiction and that we could combine this with fabulous illustration and design. I knew we would hear from people asking why we thought this was a good time to publish for children in print when the rise of the screen was so prevalent. But the reality was more interesting- kids are loving reading in print and the year we launched there was an 11% rise in children's printed books and that trend continues. Children still want an alternative to the screen, pages hold a different kind of magic. Our mission with Scoop is to bring a marvellous and diverse collection of original stories, articles and features by the world’s leading authors and illustrators to curious young minds. It is all about giving children the chance to discover a love of reading and ideas for themselves.

I hope our readers get a sense that the world is made up of many different stories and points of view. That at the heart of being human is the way we tell these stories and that from there they can go on to discover and learn without being dictated to or patronised. They can find within our pages worlds that they never knew about and they can share this wonder with their families.

For Issue 24 we decided to explore the many stories art tells, the ways we look at art and the way art stretches us to think about the world with a new perspective. We bring our readers the story of a town where all the buildings have been painted joyful colours to reflect the spirit of the place, we wonder about the mystery of why cave art was made in caves, we look at how different artists work in different ways, from selfies to graffiti, we invite everyone to create your own portraits, monograms, galleries,  hearts and stones. It is an issue jam-packed full of marvellous ideas, stories, and activities to see you through the summer holidays. I really hope you pick up a copy and dig into the story!"

Keep up to date with Scoop.
