Reading isn’t just about absorbing words on a page.

It’s about finding your voice. And discovering that your story matters.

Here at LoveReading4Kids we have always recognised that if we want children to become lifelong readers, they need more than access to books. Any books. They need agency. They need to see themselves reflected. And they need permission not just to read stories. But to tell their own.

This belief runs through our editorial, our curated book collections, every book recommendation and all of our school-facing content. Not as a bolt-on, but as the foundation.

Whose stories get told - and who gets to tell them

For generations, many children have grown up reading books that didn’t necessarily reflect their lives, their families or their lived experiences. When stories feel distant or unfamiliar, reading can become something to observe rather than immerse yourself in.

That’s why representation matters.

Through our editorial, we regularly spotlight research, awards and initiatives that challenge the sector to do better - and help families and schools find books that reflect the full breadth of children’s lives. For example:

Coverage of the CLPE Reflecting Realities survey, which tracks representation in children’s publishing and highlights where progress is - and isn’t - being made.

Features translating National Literacy Trust research into classroom and home reading insight, helping adults make informed, inclusive choices:

When children see themselves on the page  - in names, families, cultures, abilities and emotions - reading becomes personal. They feel seen. And that sense of belonging drives engagement.

Children as readers - and creators

Agency grows when children are treated not just as readers, but as participants in reading culture.

Across LoveReading4Kids, we actively celebrate initiatives that put children’s voices front and centre - encouraging them to respond creatively, share opinions and tell their own stories.

We encourage every reader to share reviews of books they have loved, to encourage their peers to engage with stories too. From any book page, you and the children in your life are encouraged to upload your review and have it published on LoveReading4Kids (or LoveReading)

The LoveReading4Kids Poetry Prize exists to celebrate the power of poetry to give children a voice, build confidence and self-expression, and help every child discover that their words  and their stories - matter.

We support and celebrate children’s writing competitions, such as the Voices competition for children in care, which centres lived experience and creative expression. And the The Shine School Media Awards which is a free national competition rewarding UK secondary schools who produce an outstanding newspaper, magazine or podcast.

Championing national initiatives like Poetry By Heart, which empower young people to perform, interpret and make poetry their own.

These initiatives reinforce a simple but powerful message: stories don’t end on the page. Reading is for everyone. Writing is for everyone. Sharing stories is for everyone.

Seeing yourself in books. And beyond them

Representation is about more than identity alone. It’s about breadth - different genres, voices, formats and ways of engaging with text.

We regularly curate and promote collections and features that:

Celebrate poetry, information books and non-fiction

Highlight diverse authors and illustrators

Encourage children to explore stories that reflect and expand their world

We have a content calendar of events across the year that highlight the breadth of brilliant books there to educate and inspire. To help everyone find the right book at the right time.

Authors, illustrators and the power of the creator voice

Understanding who makes books - and why they create books - is a powerful part of building agency.

LoveReading4Kids regularly features authors, illustrators and literacy organisations, helping children and adults see storytelling as human, creative and accessible. We shine a light on the craft of writing and illustration, demystifying the process and inviting children to imagine themselves as creators too.

Schools as spaces for voice and choice

Through LoveReading4Schools, we support schools to put pupil voice at the heart of reading culture - from reading ambassadors to pupil-led book selection.

Our school blog regularly shares:

Case studies of schools rebuilding reading cultures

Initiatives that put children in charge of recommending books

Practical ways to embed choice and agency

These stories show what happens when children are trusted as readers: confidence rises, participation widens and reading becomes shared rather than imposed.

Why voice, agency and representation matter

When children have agency, they read with confidence.

When they feel represented, they read with engagement.

When reading connects to self-expression, it becomes meaningful — and memorable.

Across LoveReading4Kids, our editorial already reflects this belief  -through curated collections, research-led features, author and illustrator spotlights, and school-facing content that encourages children not just to read stories, but to see themselves in them and respond in their own voices.

Because stories don’t just shape how children see the world.

They shape how children see themselves.
